I posted about this 1973, 4" 29-2 and how it was such a great deal for my gun show partner. Upon close examination I found the flaw. The red insert, which is factory, is loose in it's dove tail. It is still there but it moves back and forth laterally. What is the best method for securing the factory insert so it will never wiggle again?

I believe there is a Youtube video on how to replace the insert / make your own, if you're interested.

We used to mix two-part epoxy with a dab of red paint to replace or install new ones.

I got a kick when I saw one of the pythons I’d done for sale at a gun show and the seller insisted it was a rare factory job.

The plastic shrinks over time and should be replaced with a new one. The mixture is sold by Brownell's and comes in a few different colors. While you could super glue the original it back in, it will more than likely come loose again under recoil because it has shrunk.

Not a difficult job and won't break the bank.

Instead of "super glue" (cyanoacrylate) use wicking grade Loc-Tite thread locker #290. This will be a permanent repair!

This is why when I get the desire to make a front ramp sight red, I have used Testor's Model Paint to do it. For me the paint is much more simple, allows easy touch up if ever needed, changing of color is a snap and Testor's is very resistant to gun oils and solvents. It is also fully and easily removed if you decide you want the factory black look restored. No more cutting dovetails for me. Eventually if shot enough or the revolver ages, the factory plastic does shrink and fall out. Obviously if the dovetail is already cut, repairing it with the proper liquid has to be done.
