Can y`all guide me on the best way to get the "varnish" off these grips.
I`m guessing paint stripper to strip it, and steel wool to clean that stuff off? Am I correct?
Also, stripping the checkering area.
They are light in color. I was wanting to also stain them a little darker.

Thanks

Formsby Funiture Refinisher and a plastic bristle brush. Used it many times. You can buy it at Home Depot or Lowes or most any hardware store. Cleans out all the checkering and does not hurt medallions. It will evaporate as you scrub. When you’re done wash with a little soap and water and let dry. I lay mine over a heat duct.

There are a bunch of stock refinishing threads here on the forum, from doing the job of stripping, touching up checkering, to various refinishing techniques from varnish to tung oil or commercial refinishing products. Many go into great detail with pics. Do a search and mine the gold.

Wrap the grips in an old white sock, put a couple of rubber bands around to keep the fabric tight to the wood. Place in a wide mouth jar with a tight fitting lid. Pour in lacquer thinner until 1/3 - 1/2 way full. Let it soak for a couple hours. Remove and scrub gently with 4-0 steel wool or a chore - boy type synthetic pad being careful to avoid the checkering. Use an old toothbrush on the checkering. Not much scrubbing effort needed, in my experience the thinner completely removes the finish down to bare wood. Let the wood dry thoroughly and you are ready to apply the finish of your choice. I like pure Tung Oil but there are lots of options. I've used this method many times with great success.
