Not trying to flare any debates on polishing guns, but this old girl needed it. The polishing kit came off ebay. Several grits and polishing wheels for your regular grinder. About two hours work. Not perfect, but again, first time around the barn! Grips dolled it up a lot. First time trying to post a pic....we will see!

Couldn't get the pic up, but I'm working on a 1980 Stainless gun right now. My wife has this sanding cloth. . .basically a grid with square holes in it impregnated with some kind of glass fiber. I do it all by hand and it's a pain. As you use this cloth the glass wears out of it and it gets less abrasive which is perfect. All the work I do on guns and knives is done by hand. . .never use a wheel or a dremmel or motor driven device of any kind. Kind of Old World, but it always comes out nice.

Need your help folks. Followed the photobucket instruction to a t. Hints!?

A factory refinish, or one done by someone reputable will not ruin anything. Sometimes old things need to get restored if not replaced.

I don't know your skills, but an eBay kit for a bench grinder doesn't sound right to me. Certain tasks are better left to someone who has the experience or training.

Hard to argue with his results regardless of what he used.

Here ...

... let me re-attach the photo to a post so when someone deletes it from that photobucket account, it'll still be here to see.

Nice job on a nice gun, but that's an L-frame, not a Model 19.

Thank you...686 not a 19. L frame all the way. (I also stub my toes a lot!) Appreciate the clarification. As for things being left to professionals...how do you ever get good at anything if you don't try?

Nice job, no matter how you did it. I would love to see "before" and "after" photos if possible. The "after" photo looks great.

I never took a before photo....will do that next time!
