"Reissue 1871" marking on a #3 New Model

With S&Ws, it's "never say never" as markings will alway be found where they are not "normally" expected to be seen and it's not safe to say that because a certain markings is present that that is a guarantee the gun can only be a certain contract or issue. Ed

My New Model No. 3 is marked "Reissue" (shipped 1881), has no Japanese markings, and the serial number (3831) seems to be well below the serial numbers ranges that the Standard Catalog of Smith and Wesson indicates were shipped to Japan.

I am not a patent attorney, but my understanding is that a "patent reissue" marking means that the original patent had an error in it and needed to be corrected.
Or just renewed

Some pictures of this #3NM.
The pro:
- Matching number #12723 on barrel, latch, on the backstrap (under the grip, not under the handle) and inside the right grip.
- Optional lanyard ring.
- The checkered walnut grips are very nice, no chip or crack.
- Nice grooves.
- No play, very tight frame axis and lock, tiny and nearly imperceptible cylinder radial play.
The con :
- Reblued and no case hardening remains.
- Some light pitting on the cylinder and the mechanism door.
Its good/average shape helped me to get it at a reasonable price.
