Recently acquired a .38 M & P Model 2, serial number indicates it was made in 1903. It's a shooter but so am I. My favorite target load for my k-frame .38's is 3.8 grains of HP-38 using 158 grn. semi-wad cutters ( Missouri Bullet Co.). I also have a number of commercial boxes of Winchester- Western " mid-range- super match" 148 grain wad cutters that should be mild enough for a gun that's 116 years old in excellent mechanical condition. Any comments would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time and expertise.

I'd say your reloads are around 800 fps muzzle velocity, not quite maximum, but I would not load any hotter. The 148 grain target wadcutter ammo is low pressure stuff, it will never wear out that revolver.

That old girl looks pretty fine to me. I think the loads you mentioned will be fine. Good luck and enjoy.

With the 158 Lwc bullet and HP-38 type powder in my 38's

I have found my lowest starting loads is just .2 less than your stated load to prevent a squib in my 2-6" barrels, with a safe
minimal fps load.

The other option for a slower safe load would be to use, Trail Boss powder that has very low pressures.
