Remington 165 gr CoreLokt 357 Mag hunting loads

Hello,

Any one have actual experience with this load on deer, large feral dogs, etc.?

I am slowly sorting out ammo choices for my S&W M60 with 5" barrel. One of uses for this multipurpose gun is deer hunting and protection against feral dogs, possibly even a puma, while hiking, etc.. Gun will most likely be sighted for 30-40 yards with 158 gr 38 Sp +P FBI load, likely Remington or handload with Remington SWC HPs loaded to same velocity. Prefer to have woods carry load that shoots close to same POI, even an inch or two higher. Remington 165 grain CoreLokt hunting load seems like excellent choice. For hunting, POI would be adjusted to 75 yards.

No experience with this load. I do have experience with Remington's 357 Magnum
158 grain SWC. I used it from a 4" Model
28 on a 150 pound feral pig. The shock wave
was visible on the hog at impact. He didnt last long.

I would recommend a Semi Wad of no less than 158 grains on deer. HPs are fine, but at much more than 25 yards, expansion will not be great
and the bullet profile on a JHP is not as good as SWC when they dont expand. Just my 2 cents.

For dogs and puma, the FBI load would be fine. I have seen it at work on a dog. It would protect you well. It will be hard to find a 357
heavy HP thats hits close to a 38+P FBI load.
You might look at Buffalo Bore ammo, they have some great 357 heavy loads for deer.

FYI.

This load along with its big brother 275 grain .44 Mag CoreLokt load have been discontinued by Remington.

Never had a chance to try any. On paper, it sure looked like a good load.

For what it's worth, I'm keeping a box of that in case I ever fnd myself in bear country. But I bet it'd kick pretty hard in your J-frame.

Would not want to shoot a bear with any revolver that did not kick pretty hard. Previous revolver carrys in serious bear country were heavily loaded 45 Colt or 44-40, both with 300 grain lead alloy bullets at about 900-1000 fps, in Ruger Vaqueros with 4,5-5,5 inch barrels. No fun whatsoever shooting those but, they were some of best grouping loads in both revolvers. Got tired of carrying such heavy, large revolvers for days or weeks. Never fired either on the trail.

I have shot severla whitetail with my 357 Super Blackhawk in 357 Maximum and 357 magnum. I use both 158 grain JSP and JHPs in the 357 magnum loads with good results to about 35-40 yards. I have shot the Maximum load with 180 grain Remington factory JHPs and have killed 2 whitetail at more than 60 yards both 1 shot kills.

Sounds like you consider the regular Remington 357 Mag 158 grain JSPs and JHPs to be quite adequate on deer, with little need for the Remington CoreLokt bullets. That would sure make ammo buying simpler, as well as sight adjustment.
