Remington R-51

For the price point being discussed, where is this gun being manufactured? Granted, Freedom Group has enough gun making facilities (until it's sold, if it is), but are they being used for this one, or is the gun being made off-shore.

Has there been some announcement of "Proudly Made in America" that I skipped over in reading the announcements so far?

Last I read, Cerberus was having troubling find a bank to help with the sale of Freedom Group (including Remington Arms)? Cerberus finds difficulty selling Freedom Group : Business

The only range test I've been able to see online discussed how 10 of the pre-production pistols provided for demo purpose only experienced some minor issues that were resolved with light cleaning & lubrication?

I think I'll sit this one out for a couple of years and see how well it fares before I get overly excited about a new from the past. I dislike being a Beta tester.

Apparently a lot remains to be learned about this pistol. I was just at my LGS, one that always has fair prices on guns, and slightly to far lower prices on ammo than surrounding stores.

When I asked if they had any on order and what their list price was going to be, they said "yes" and $609!:eek:

I told them the MSRP is $389, and they said "no, it's $589". I can't imagine this store gouging, so maybe we have to wait for a more official unveiling at SHOT next week to get some questions answered.

I checked with 2 local gun shops, one said they already have them on order and will be selling them for $355 each the other said they were going to be marked $365 each. If your LGS already has a distributor lined up they know very well what they are going for. Otherwise they are being gouged or trying to gouge someone else. Of course it's always possible that the clerk just didn't know what he is talking about.

I have a Remington 1911 and it is an excellent gun with top notch fit & finish, regardless where the frame and slide are made (which is supposedly NY). We're talking about Remington here, not Caracal. I am going to take the risk and get one right out of the gate. Just like I did with the S&W Shield and several other pistols.

hmmmm...if that info is accurate...200 bucks would be a game changer....for me at least....not an apples to apples comparison...but for $600 you could find a really nice 3rd. gen....... and if thats not your flavor......... a decent sig p226

I had much the same thought when the Shield was announced. In the interim while waiting to see if this was something I wanted I was able to buy a 3913 and no rail 3913TSW. Both of which do everything the Shield does and more.

Since it will likely be a year or so before the R51 gets on the MA approved list, I'll have plenty of time to read reviews. I think the concept and design are good, but the real test will be in the construction and durability of the R51.

I certainly wouldn't be against owning a non S&W gun if it was a quality product.

I'm thinking someone was just confused since this is a new pistol. I hope so, as I'd hate to see this shop try and pull something like that.

Like others have said, I too hate being a beta tester, but if I can get my mitts on one and like how it looks/feels, and it's priced $350-375, I can't rule out taking a chance. If it's even over $400, I'll wait and see.

An interesting pistol and I would like a more compact 9mm. I like the ray gun look, too, but will wait to read the reports from you guys before deciding. :)

Looking forward to hearing.

There, I fixed your post :p

I like the format of the gun, but damn it's ugly.

No matter how ugly it is, it's still far prettier than any Glock! Not that I need another 9mm (have eight), however I like the looks of the R51 and will defiantly scope on out when they are available, never know there may still be room on the safes 9mm shelf......

Well my LGS is going to be selling them for $420, to bite or not to bite. I was expecting them to go down from the MSRP not up.

So since Remington is resurrecting the Model 51, when do you guys think Colt will reintroduce a new slightly beefed up version of the M-1903/1908 pocket autos and then Smith and Wesson with their .35 pocket autos? I was just thinking to myself the other day why no one has tried updating the Remington and then this post pops up. So any day now we will have our flying cars like in the Jetsons!

I don't know that Colt has had an original new idea in 50 years.

Y'all are taking about replacing the 3913, I'm thinking it could replace my J-frame. Looking at the pics of the J-frame on top of the original Model 51, I'm thinking that would be good for when I want something smaller than my Commander.
Right now when I want something smaller I have three choices. A J-frame, my older .380 Mustang or a Colt Model M. Well the Colts are something of collectors items including the Mustang these days. And frankly, J-frames have never fit my hand well. The new Model 51 may be just what I'm looking for.
Also, if its built half as well as Remington's 1911s, they've got a real winner. :D

This is the first "new" gun that I might buy. I have handled the old Remington 51 years ago and they felt about perfect in the hand. They were in .380. Now if this is almost the same feeling gun in 9mm it sure calls me.
I may get one if it hefts, points and feels like I remember the original. Years ago I owned several s&w`s model 39s and they felt good too but were bigger I believe.

$389 msrp. That's about $330 ma&pa LGS price. All metal, American made, sounds too good to be true. Something seems fishy. If Remington pulls this off and I can buy one in the $300ish range, I take back all the bad things I ever said about them.

While I have owned a number of autos many years ago I never really seriously packed one but a few times. I do own a highly customized remington rand by pachmyer done back in the 50s. This remington appeals to me. For pocket or concealed carry it sounds ideal. Just a extra magazine and I would be in business. I did have a couple .380s years ago, but this being in 9mm sounds great. I dont know much about .40s but understand that will be next. If this gun proves out for reliability, I bet it will become a real high production gun outrunning just about anything else. The keltec might be lighter but its plastic. Most of old guys in my age bracket will go for a good metal 9mm pocket auto that have stuck with snub revolvers. Years ago I bought a browning BDA 380, it was nice but it dawned on me if I wanted a gun that big it should be in 9mm. Now it is AND it aint plastic!

Just the other day one of the guys at the range mentioned that a LE dealer said they could be ordered for $299 LE price.

I'm calling BS on Remington. We will not see an American made gun, all metal, single action / no manual thumb safety and priced under $400. No flipping way!. I hope Remington proves me wrong, but they won't. Something will change before production. Probably the frame material, a safety will be added and we will learn that Remington is having them imported from off shore, or the price will be a couple hundred higher.

Had a R51 in my hands last weekend. Hated the slide it was so stiff. Also saw reviews of the rear sight falling off. I loved the feel but just couldn't bring myself to buy one so I bought the shield for less money. I really wanted to like the R51.
