Remington thunderbolt

Never tried it, as the 15-22 manual states specifically not to use it. Well, okay, they say that S&W does not recommend it, or any Remington ammo, for that matter.

Remington .22 is not the best .22 on the market....I wouldn't use it. Between the leading and misfires there's many different brands I prefer and Smith recommends against it, so why use it?

thunderbolt is the worst, i had a completely leaded up barrel on my GSG-5 after about 1000 rounds at the range.

Warning: Don't use Remington Thundercrap ammo in your GSG-5 - AR15.Com Archive

So when did Remington Thunderbolts turn into junk ? It used to be "fairly" reasonable ammo. I found some old (four bricks) of (old as in the price tag said $4.98 each on them from Pamida) Thunderbolts and Winchester Wildcats berried in an old ammo can and they still shoot just great. Sure surprised me,I've had zero failures so far with the old plinker ammo. It's gotta be at least 25+ years old.

I switched to CCI's a long time ago for serious shooting & hunting and never really looked back.

The quality control on Thunderbolts has dropped drastically in the last 10 years. Now, it's pretty much considered the bottom of the line in .22 LR ammo.

If somebody uses Rem. Thunderbolts, their is a good chance that they will have a squib load, {I've had two}, down the road, which could make for a very bad day; if not for a bulge in the barrel.

I've read so many bad reports on Remington Thunderbolts that there's got to be some truth to it. However, they have always worked fine for me in my two Ruger .22 pistols. I even stopped using them for awhile after reading so many bad reports, but recently bought some more at Dick's. They still work fine for me and seem to have an edge over the other cheap .22's that I shoot. Just my experience.

Remington Thunderbolt is very acurate ammo and reasonable priced. The problem is with any high velocity unplated bullets which tend to lead the barerwel when you do not allow the barrel to cool between periods of fire. I badly leaded a barrel which took a long time with bronze brushes to clean out all the lead. Now I allow the barrel of my pistol to cool after dfiring about 25 rounds - no more leading problems. The better solutio is to use a copper plated/washed bullet and avoind the issue altogether. In any case it is wise to prevent the barrel from becoming hot.

I have not had good luck with Remington Rimfire Ammo at all,I have had good luck with Federal 510's from Wal-Mart & Federal Bulk Pack & The CCI Mini Mag's as stated above Remington is not recomended in S&W's 15-22 Manual,20 or 25 year a go I used to shoot plenty of Remington Rimfire Ammo & never had much problems with it I guess quality has went downhill,I did shoot some older Golden Bullet Long Rifiles a while back (Red & White Box From the70's) It was fine.

While individual shooters may have good results with Remington .22 LR (and many do), their batch to batch consistency and quality has been poor for years. Whether or not it has anything to do with the closing of their primary production facility in Bridgeport, Connecticut, several years ago I don't know. It may be coincidental.

Interestingly, Remington's centerfire ammo, both rifle and pistol, is considered top notch. Their Golden Saber pistol is considered by many to be the top of the line in self-defense ammo.

Heat is one thing I've always kept an eye on. Learned it long range precision target shooting from an old sniper friend. Those were copper jacket bullets.

Figure what lead melts at and shooting rapid fire with a 22... kind of speaks for itself for barrel leading.

Before I bought my 15-22 I used my father's old Apache .22lr and he would always buy Thunderbolts. By the second 10-rd mag you would have FTF and FTE like crazy.

In my 15-22 I have only shot Winchester Dynapoints and CCI AR Tactical. I have had problems with the Winchesters but not a single issue with the CCI AR Tactical.

If any ammo with the Remington name was given to me for free I would turn it down.

If you paid ME 100 bucks to use a brick of Remington Thunderbolts I would turn it down.

Remingtton was a good name back in the 1970's but since then ALL their ammo is ****. Their guns aren't much better.

Hope my comments were not too harsh. But I've been bitten too many times. The last Rem I used was over 10 years ago.

I tried all the ones they recommended not to use, 50 rounds of each and didn't have any issues with them, but 50 rounds isn't a good sampling

I had a brick of Remington Golden Bullet hiding in the closet when I got my 15-22, and it had a very high malfunction rate. I've had the same problem with Winchester Wildcat, which converted a perfectly reliable Ruger 10-22 into a jam-o-matic.
