Picked up a Remlin 1895 GBL. It’s in shipping now & will get custom work by Grizzly Custom Guns if it all checks out. It’s a December 2017 mfg rifle.

Photos of the 1977 version 1895 are in posts 10 & 11.

GBL photos are in post 16.

I've got a Marlin 1895 Ltd from the mid to late 1990's I believe. It is larger and heavier than the GBL which is cumbersome to tote around but honestly I like the extra weight to absorb the full house hunting rounds. Even when I use lighter loads at the target range, it still has a nice kick - lol.

When I bought mine Marlin was it's own Company and the quality was superb. Hopefully yours is one that they got right once again. Let us know and good luck with it.

I have a LTD II (1998 mfg 24” octagon barrel) also in addition to a 1977 vintage 1895. The ‘77 is a 22” barrel straight stock that I had a full length magazine tube put on along with action work & a skinner rear peep sight

I'm jealous. I've been toying with the idea of getting a used 1895 or possibly a Marlin 444. I'm honestly a bit surprised how well they hold their value.

I will be interested to see what work you have done, since I have a recently acquired Remlin 1895 GBL as well. I put the rail and scope on it.

It is shown here with my other lever guns, from bottom to top:

JM Marlin 39A .22
JM Marlin 336 .30-30
The GBL
JM Marlin 1894C .357 magnum
Rossi 1892 .45 Colt
Savage 99 .300 Savage

Good Old 45-70Govt

Congratulations.

I shot a brand new circa 2018 Marlin SBL (Jurassic Park)
Stainless Steel 45-70Govt45-70 a while back with some
Reloads I made.

People just want to Bitch about Remington. This 2018 Marlin
was well made, Stainless Steel was well finished and
lever bolt release cycled like it should, and accurate enough.

I will eventually get one. I have picked apart several GBL's
(which are priced good) and as picky as I am, they, again were
well put together, and finished.

The Best to you and your Endeavors. Give a Range
Report when you get a chance.

When the Guide Guns were first introduced, they all had factory porting. later only 444 and 450 Marlin chambered guns had porting!

I was visiting a gun store (an every day routine) when GG first were release. 2 men each bought one in 45-70. The next day there were 2 used GG's for sale used, one unfired the other fired twice! Several months later I bought a used GG, and the counter guys gave me a partial box of Factory ammo (the only factory 45-70 I ever shot!), it was the box the two friends shot from. 300 grain soft point Winchester. I loaded 4 rounds and slow fired them all! What a mild round! I have fired 336 and 1894 Marlins in 44 mag that kicked worse!!! All I can assume is the "Two Friends" didn't know how to hold a Center fire rifle!

My standard load for the Guide Gun is 400 grain RN hard cast with gas check over a heavy load of IMR 3031 at 2100 fps (from a 26" 1886) and is about 3900 ft lbs of ME. The Winchester factory ammo is about 2350 foot pounds.

In a test to see how well the gun performs as a back up dangerous game rifle, I set a 6" bullseye target at 50 yards. The object is to keep all 5 shots in 6" but fire as fast as possible. I fired all five rounds in about 1.75 seconds, but my group was 1.5"!

1977 vintage 1895

So here’s the ‘77 mfg 1895. It was originally a half magazine tube but I prefer the balance of a full length tube in addition to the extra capacity. I haven’t verified the capacity yet. The action is like butter now. Extremely smooth. The barrel & Mag tube were reblued as they were worked on. The blueing looks great to me. I can’t speak highly enough of the work Grizzly Custom Guns did. They also put a target crown on the muzzle. I’m anxious to shoot it.

Very interesting front sight riser! I think I like it better than just an extra tall blade.

Now you need a cartridge belt. I found a leather guy at a Cowboy shoot, he made one while I was out shooting, holts 40 of the 45-70 or longer 45-90 rounds. 2 inch at the ends, and 3.5 where the cases are. Nickel plated brass buckle too. It was 10 or 12 years ago, but was only $35 including sales tax. I couldn't beat that with a stick!!!

I bought a new 1895 Marlin .45-70 in 1973. It had the 22" barrel with a straight stock and a curved plastic butt plate. It was fine with 405 grain factory loads, but a bit of a bear with my handloaded 400 grain Speer over a generous charge of 3031.

It got sold during one of life's cashless periods. Wish I had it back! :(
