Removing front sight on M&P Sport

I want to free float the barrel on my Sport, but can't get the pins out. I took it to a friend who has removed many and we can't get the pins to budge - even using a 24 oz hammer. Any suggestions?

S&W uses tapered pins and they are typically backwards from the way every other manufacturer puts them in.

Do a search, many threads on this issue on this board.

I just did this to my Sport. Adding a Vtac 15" rail. The taper pins on my Sport were reversed. You could tell just by looking at each side which was the side to start pounding on. I had to use a smaller hammer and really smack the h*** out of it. Just be careful and support the barrel and sight block to keep it from moving. I used some clean rags, a milled out 2x4 and more rags.

Use some penetrating oil. Let it sit for a few min. Then smack the bejeebus out of the pins.

Thanks for the replies. I ended up using a vise to push on the pin and supported it on the other side.

Are you aware that it's a gas block too?
