Removing scratches

To OP, you have a beautiful gun that has acquired handling marks from usage & just general wear & tear. It is a 50 year old gun afterall. You were given good advice, the most you would want to do is apply a light coating of wax which will minimize those marks.
However if those marks will always bother you or your eye will always be drawn to those "scratches" I suggest that you just sell this gun and shop for a finer condition gun. Some guys are that way, they have to have things in a perfect condition. I'm Not knocking you for that, But there are alternatives and this may be the solution for you.
So before you end up doing more harm than good trying to mask those blemishes give this some thought. In any event Good Luck in whatever you decide to do. Your gun, your choice.

Good info and advice. I’m going to keep it and enjoy it.

Just send it to Turnbull if the scratches bother you that much.

The first guy never has a chance....these are scratches.

OP: you've got a pretty one there. Just put some Ren wax on it and enjoy it. IMHO anything more will only make he final product worse.
Amen!
That's a truck gun - meaning it was tied to string and dragged behind a truck. :D:D:D
Seriously, just shoot it and have fun. Those marks won't buff out without really ruining the gun finish. You might try a very careful, repeated application of cold blue to darken the places where the bright steel is showing through.

Smart decision!

There's something to be said about "character".
Whether a gun is used well, or whether it is abused, it will bear the evidence. The informed eye can spot the difference.

It's not much different than with people. We all get older, and show our age. Honest character tends to look better on a person than does plastic surgery!

You got yourself a wonderful classic S&W. As you get to use and enjoy it, I bet those "scratches" will endear themselves to you on a certain level.

Hello, I picked up a really nice 19–3 ........ It’s blued, and is in good shape but if possible I’d like to try to buff out some scratches.

There is NO way to buff out a scratch !! Especially if the scratch is thru the blue and down to the base metal. If the blue simply has some light scuffs, you "might" be able to blend it in with a very light touch and some Flitz or semichrome. Light touch being the key word !!

There's not much you can do getting scratches off of a Blued Gun's finish. Using any polishing compound aggressive enough to get them out WILL remove the finish!

You either have to live with them or refinish it.
