Pistola.

The pistol version M&P 15-22 has a 5.5 inch barrel. The wrench I bought is 10 3\4 inches long. There is no way to hold on to the barrel while turning the wrench. The barrel protrudes 3\4 of an inch beyond the handguard. The video doen't cover the pistol.

My problem is that it is strongly recommended to clamp the barrel in a set of barrel vise clamps to keep from torqueing on the upper and there isn't enough barrel to get on. At least it seems that way to me. Maybe, Tacticool and Belt-fed could make some shorty barrel wrenchs.:p It's probably not economically practical for them but it just occured to me while I am typing that there is a homemade wrench out of PVC that might be the ticket for us pistol owners.

lol WOW I TOTALLY missed that "p" at the end.. my bad.. lol But in theory shouldnt they be the basic same? Its a 15-22, only shorter.

Short barrel

Still got to get a wrench on it and still have room to grab the barrel. You could put a barrel extention on and be able to get the barrel nut off but it won't work in reverse.

Here's what I would do. First, put on a thread protector to keep from boogering up the muzzle threads. Get someone to hold the pistol for you. Put a wrench on the barrel nut wrench and give it a easy but sharp whack with a hammer to crack loose the barrel nut. Don't try to muscle the barrel nut loose because it is possible to twist the barrel inside the receiver.

My hobby version of the wrench is only 1.5 inches long so you can put any length of pipe on you want. The trick is holding onto that tiny bit of barrel.
I suggest buying a 1/2-28 nut, cut thru one of the wrench flats with a saw and use that as a barrel holder. When you clamp down with a vise or vise jaws, the nut will collapse and grip the threads. Be careful though. The sawing will put burrs on the threads and you could bugger up the threads on the barrel if you are not careful.
Or just hold onto the upper and hope for the best. brett248vista has some warnings about that.

Got it!

Put the wrench on , Held the receiver by hand and gave the wrench a wack with the rubber mallet. Didn't seem very tight at all. Thanks guys.:)
