And I think your decision to not mess with trying to get rid of spots was a sound one, as they could very well be from a fungus that invaded the wood grain pores, which is called spalting.

Interesting. I looked up spalting and read about it. I had never heard of it before.
Yes on the spalting. As a matter of fact, some spalted woods bring a premium..... Again, good decision and great results.
