I shoot all mine DA only. I have been shooting matches with S&W revos since 1979. Shot tons of PPC and some Bullseye when that's all there was. I was able to master the 12 or so lbs. of pull from a stock gun, but most of mine have been smoothed and lightened for competition. You can definitely shoot better with a smooth and light action than a heavy factory action. The factory one is kind of like a staple gun, where you have a lot of force that's suddenly released, thus moving the gun and the point of impact. With a really good DA, you don't need SA.
I have since invented and filed for patents on a drop in hammer kit that makes the trigger pull get significantly lighter as you pull it back. The beginning pull is whatever the mainspring is set for to set off the primers. The ending pull is whatever just the rebound spring is, with a very smooth pull through. The hammer kits are sold on
Welcome to RevUp Action®! - RevUp Action® with 15 second videos of different setups showing the trigger pull of each. I invented and made a special trigger pull gage to show what the trigger is doing all the way through. With this kit you get the speed and convenience of DA and the shot placement control of SA, all in one.
I also invented a Half Fast Action for 8 shots (627 & 629) that you only have to pull the trigger slightly more than 1/2 the normal distance to cycle and fire the gun. I can shoot these faster and more accurately than the regular trigger pull, but it only works on 8 shots, due to the shorter travel of the cylinder.
No one else has ever figured out either of these things before. They make revolver shooting more enjoyable than ever. I wish I would have had these back in my PPC days.
As everyone else has already said, all this is only for the range. These actions have NO place in a carry gun. Keep the carry gun stock. If you ever have to use it, you could do a 30 pound trigger pull and not notice it.
