Revolvers, I get it now

I learned how to shoot handguns on S&W revolvers, but I grew up in the early days of DA/SA designs, polymer frames, and striker fired pistols. Wanting something my dad didn't have, I bought my first HK USP in '94, followed up with Sigs, Berettas, and Walthers. I always had a Hi Power or two and a 1911, but it wasn't until I was in my 30's that I really came back to the wheel guns. And the guys here aren't lying when they say they get addictive. Don't even get me started on the weird little world of grip collecting :D. Oddly enough, I bought my first Glock a few years back, and now have a couple and even some P80's. I guess I just like a little bit of everything.

The revolver world is fairly new to me. When I was a younger man I had a M18 and M34 but sold them off for God know what. When I got out of the service I bought a M29 nickel 6 1/2 barrel. I got so I could keep a pop can moving out to 50 yards. Then came the shotguns and the rifles and the revolver languished in the safe. I recently rediscovered how much fun these are with my Grandfathers 1905 M&P Target. I have reacquired several K22's, M18's and 34's. There are M19's, 14's 57's,27's and 29's. Next week will see delivery of a M48, M57 & M29.
BE CAREFUL this is a deep rabbit hole.....and I love it:D
I took several revolvers and a Kimber Micro 9 to the range this morning. All were fun to shoot but the Kimber was a PIA to reload. I think I need a nice snub nose 38 to carry while bird hunting this fall.

I started as a rookie LEO in 1969. For over 15 years we carried and shot revolvers and had qualifications every month. There were only a couple of officers on my department who couldn't shoot well and even they managed to qualify. The bottom feeders came along around 1986 and I had to learn to shoot all over again. I'm retired now and frequently carry a 3" model 65 as a CCW. I feel pretty sure I'm going to hit "bullseye" with my first shot of Hydra Shock .357 magnum. I shouldn't need many more and if I do I keep a high cap plastic fantastic in the truck.

Yeah posting that legion was bad enough lol

Pretty sure you have to get into the RMs and TLs before you get to quite that level.

A nice high polish blue 4" Model 19 with 3 T's meets the Corvette standard.

Handling and firing a Registered Magnum or a Triple Lock is like being dressed to the 9's and rolling up to the Cotton Club in a 35 Packard Super Eight. :D

My local gun store manager said just yesterday I'm a member of a cult. He sells mostly plastic guns and 1911's. My buddies and I have bought many estate guns from him and he does all my transfers. He's correct. But my question to him is how many customers of his "collect" Glocks? I can't imagine anyone saying "Come over and we'll get out my 20 Glocks and look them over!"

I must admit that I have lots of Glocks. (I'm a 'rule of 2s guy) For a while there was a balance of power in the safe: Add a Smith revolver, add a Glock, add a Smith and so forth...

Truth is the Glocks are very effective tools but the Smiths I've added lately have been to replace items I regret selling in the past. Since my regret list is long and Smith heavy the revolvers have now surpassed semiautos. My Glocks will probably never again regain parity.

Guess that makes me a shooter of Glocks and a collector of SHOOTER Smiths.

I'm not besmirching Glocks by any means. I have a 42 I carry in the summer. I've got Sig's, Dan Wesson's, and Kimbers. They are great tools. But if I want to just get a gun out to look at it, normally it will say Smith&Wesson on it.

Yep, you got me there. When I pull something out of the safe just to admire and fondle or to 'clean and lube' a gun that doesn't really need it, it's a Smith revolver or an over & under Browning shotgun...;)

I mean, really...if you've seen one Glock, you've seen them all...literally...

Hey, they're fine tools for launching a bullet...but that's all...no pride of ownership, no mystique about them...they're just...Glocks.

What's not to love?

I have this Glock my grandfather carried in the war, that I take out to shoot on Father's day, otherwise I keep it oiled down and in the back of the safe ,
Said NOBODY EVER.

Because Glocks aren't fun to shoot or....

Tis said ... a pun in the lowest form of humor. Well, you pun simply proves the exception to the rule! Agree ... revolvers! Very much enjoy them! Have a non-descript RIA 1911 and a Sig 226 Legion. Outstanding! But, time after time, it is a revolver that comes to hand. You have bought one of the very best of S&W revolvers. Enjoy! Sincerely. bruce.

This thread...at a time when I'm considering parting with $500 for a Sig P365.

Buy the P365.

There's a difference between the emotional attraction to the mechanical artistry of a classic S&W revolver, and the realities of modern self defense. There is no place for emotion or nostalgia in practical gunfighting.

The P365 is a fantastic CCW piece, one of the best I've ever owned. I actually own two of them (P365 and P365XL), and they have pretty much taken over all of my off-duty carry.

That doesn't, for one second, diminish my love of Smith revolvers; or my enjoyment from shooting them. I just acknowlege that the state of the art has changed, and enjoy them both for what they are.

Cutting edge, from the 1930s to the 2020s...

Interesting thread. The above remark is an understatement. Getting out a gun to just look at it requires that the gun be more than a gun; it not only has soul, it is a work of art. S&W revolvers are just that, works of art, all models, all sizes. Not to take anything away from other companies' revolvers but this is the Smith & Wesson Forum and S&W's revolvers are just beautiful.

Admittedly, there are other guns to be admired as art, some are not even revolvers, but revolvers rule the beauty roost as far as I am concerned. :)

This, that soul comment totally holds true as well. There is just a different feel with them
