Rex Firearms Co. ?

I get calls from people quite often who have tracked me down.
I do NOT have any records remaining from my association with Rex, only the memories dimmed by the decades that have since passed.

The decades have dimmed a lot of our memories even though I was not quite born when you started your shop. I hope you are doing well.

I know this is a very old thread but I just found out that my S&W .44 Magnum shipped to Rex Dec 26, 1957. So in my Google search of Rex this thread came up. Very interesting!
Mine is S 179423

And just so you know Rex dealt in regular, everyday guns, I had a .22 Combat Masterpiece shipped to them August 11, 1954----and a Model 41 shipped to them September 16, 1971.

The Model 41 was one of those with a 5 1/2" heavy barrel and the extendable front sight------- that might qualify as something other than regular and everyday, but you couldn't tell it by me.

I'm curious, how did Rex and other NYC gunshops deal with NYCs Sullivan Law? If you bought a gun directly from Rex in NYC did it have to get shipped out if the city or could you take it with you?

Great question. I grew up in NYC in the 1940's and 1950's. At that time, long guns were essentially unregulated in NY, but handguns (even antiques) required a permit that listed all of your handguns. This is true throughout New York State, since the 1911 Sullivan Law is a state law. Even with a permit, you could not take possession of the gun until it was added to your permit. I had a permit from Orange County at one time (about 50 miles north of NYC) and if I bought a gun in NYC it would have to be added to my permit and then shipped to me. I also had residence in CT at that time and could buy a handgun in NYC and have it shipped to my CT address. That was pre-1968.

As someone who has always been fascinated with NYC and somewhat recently developed an obsession with S&W - This is one of the best and most interesting threads I have seen on this forum. RIP tired Gunsmith. You became A legend to me after reading this!

Got on the forum this morning and to my surprise I see one of my threads from 2009. This is great! Thanks for bringing this back around.

Man I have to tell you this thread brought me a lot of joy. Very very interesting. When I previously commented I was doing the math thinking that tired gunsmith said he was going to be 90 in 2009 when I re-read it just now it was 2017 when he said that not 2009. Lets hope he is still alive and kicking. I apologize.

A brace of zombies to go in this zombie thread.

Here's a Chiefs Special Airweight S&W shipped to Rex Firearms Company
on July 31, 1953. Aluminum cylinder.

A 3" Chiefs Special S&W shipped to Rex Firearms Company, one of three
in the order, on May 7, 1954.
