RIP Sean Connery

Irony

Great actor. Anti-gun, but great actor . . .

Is is not ironic that a great many of his films had him wielding firearms? Same for a boatload of Hollywood movies from an industry population that is generally anti-2A. Always struck by the promotional posters with the stars pointing guns at something. Could the almighty $ transcend principles? None of this controversy diminishes Connery's Academy Award level talent. Wish I could find a streaming copy of "Darby O'Gill and the Little People". Scared the willies out of me as a kid.

Well, Sean Connery participated in one 40-second anti-handgun ad 23 years ago, in his country which has no tradition of free citizens with a 2nd Amendment and constitutional gun rights, where gun control is simply a public policy issue. So it really matters not at all to us.

On a more general note, I’ve always thought that these attempts to tie gun-wielding actors’ roles to their personal opinions about guns really miss the point.

I’m sure nobody accused Alec Guinness and Anthony Hopkins of hypocrisy for playing Adolf Hitler in movies without personally being in favor of murdering millions. I also think nobody expected John Wayne to be personally supportive of burning down cities and butchering women and children by the thousands when he played Ghengis Khan in that horrible movie “The Conquerer”. It’s called “acting” :)

After some web searching I learned that Dalton, Brosnan and Craig concur that they all walked in Sean's shadow.

The boys and I are going to watch The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen tonight.

That would have been shortly after the Dunblane Massacre.

As for your thoughts on acting, you are bang on. I have no interest in an actor's race, politics or much else so long as they can entertain me with their acting.

Another good obit. This one from the WaPo: https://www.washingtonpost.com/loca...bff0a6-1b75-11eb-82db-60b15c874105_story.html

Favorite quote: "As 'Dr. No' director Terence Young once said, 'There are only two great stars in my recollection who have not been changed by great massive success: Sean Connery and Lassie, and both of them Scottish.'"

Second favorite, re Bond movies:

Mr. Connery said he tired of the fuss. “The first two or three were fun,” he once said. “Jumping out of planes was entertaining, although it was tough on my hairpiece.”

Connery was given credit as being "the first James Bond". The best, without a doubt. But not the first. I remember seeing this on TV back in the 1960's so I checked YouTube and sure enough it is available. A TV teleplay from 1954, with Barry Nelson as the first James Bond in Casino Royale. Co starring Peter Lorre !

Bond...James Bond

So sad to hear of the passing of the Best Bond ever, Rest In Peace Sir.

And what post is complete without his signature Walther, it’s even a Smith & Wesson, perfect, because it’s mine!
