Root beer

St Arnold's brewery here in town makes the BEST root beer I've ever tasted...

beats the pants off the mass produced Mug, Barque's, A&W and even the finer Frosty, Dad's, IBC, and Virgil's.

I agree with whoever said Henry Weinhard's. Only sold in the Pacific Northwest. It's literally so good that I will pay the cost (not cheap) to have it shipped to me. I'll also drink Dad's, Faygo (the only mass-distributed root beer I've ever had that's tasted any good), and Dogs n Duds, also Boylan's if there's nothing else in stock. Still, if someone has A&W or Barq's as their only option, it's drinkable.

I work at a place that produces Hanks and Virgils rootbeer. They also make their own brand. I am happy to say that I get a free case a month. This stuff aint cheap.

Virgils Root Beer, try it once and you will forget the other brands.

Funny you mention Virgil's. I actually like it a lot, but don't consider it a traditional root beer. It's a terrific soda, just very different from anything I'd define as root beer. The same is true of Vernors Ginger Soda (although admittedly never advertised as ginger ale); whilst I like it better than Stewart's Ginger Beer (my favorite true ginger ale), I will answer "Stewart's" if someone asks me what my favorite ginger ale is.

Virgil's DOES however make a very traditional cream soda, which is my single favorite soda they make.

I like A&W if its from the tap and in one of their frosted mugs.
Henry Weinhards is excellent in a bottled version.

I had some others that were very good from small producers, but don't recall their names. I don't drink enough root beer to pay all that much attention. A foot long dog with chilli, cheese, & onions with an ice cold root beer is a great summer treat.

Three of my favorite soft drinks (all for different reasons):

Blenheim Hot Ginger Ale (I dare you to pour this into a snifter and take a deep breath)

Dr. Brown's CEL-RAY celery tonic (with a pastrami sandwich)

Jarritos Tamarindo

An A&W Root Beet float, from the tap, is about as good as it gets.

There's another local favorite here in Michigan, that's popular at the Dairy Queen outlets. It's called a "Boston Cooler", made with Vernor's Ginger Ale. We make them at home sometimes, with Bryer's Ice Cream.

And, please. Don't ask me how a drink made with a Detroit legend got a New England title. It's just really tasty.

IBC brand root beer is my favorite it was served in the cafeteria at the college i attended the best imho.

Dads' Old Fashioned" for me*

dad used to bring home a quart of "dads" and some vanilla ice cream and make "black cows" for all of us..............mmmmmmmmm that was living!!!

It used to be in the early 60's when my folks were gone I'd be given money for my brother and I to have dinner at the local A&W within walking distance.
We'd order Papa burgers with onion rings and a root beer in a frosted mug. I've tried but never mad better since. Plus those much older 16 year old car hops were something to lust over at the time. I'd go to jail now for my thoughts back then.

I also enjoy the Michigan Boston cooler made with the Vernors soda. Best served with the local Halo Burger supreme burger.

Dennis and Brian, I just drink Vernors straight from the bottle, can, or whatever. At room temperature. For whatever reason, I've always liked it that way best.

IBC is great, but Abita has an excellent RB out of Louisianna. Try it if you can get it.

About the only root beer I'll drink are the ones made locally and served in two local burger joints. Weber's is best. A friend has resurrected AAA Root Beer in the Oklahoma City area, but I haven't had the chance to try it yet.

Root Beer lovers take note: San Antonio Texas. Schilo's Deli. 424 E. Commerce. The oldest continually operated eatery in Texas, I understand. They make their own Root Beer, straight up by the mug or a Float will rock your world.:p Bliss!
