Rosewood burl hideout grips more franzite..What people want in custom revolver grips

Jrhoney ... I have made a set like you mentioned (just enough to get your pinky on )
but in curly walnut

Those look ideal! Curly walnut is high on my list of wood on guns. 1st for rifles and 2nd for revolvers(just behind maple on blued guns)

PLeeeeeeese! K frame checkered target grips with diamond around the screw, with a coke profile, done in dark walnut or rosewood. Exactly like S&W made in the late 50s when they valued comfort & quality more than "the bottom line".

This sounds good to me, including the dark color to set off my stainless K-frames. :D The K-frame sized Roper style also sounds good to me (again in darker wood.) One thing you haven't mentioned is price range for these... that will make a big difference in whether I can justify a set (or more) with all the other projects. Also, do you expect to provide them with checkering?

I am still up in the air on price. I was hoping to get more feedback from you guys. A few years ago when I first tried to sell on here, $75-$90 was what "the other guy" was charging for smooth grips with no medallions. BTW I have aquired about 6 sets of medallions wich cost $20 a set. I have practiced checkering on a couple old grips but that is going to take more time before I am wiling to do it to a nice set. What I really need is one of those Foredom power checkering head wich is $600 . Oh and a Grizzly Bandsaw wich is $500 for resaw capability. I have alot of nice wood that is 2-3inches thick, everything has to be got down to about an "1 in thickness.

Anyway I am willing to sell cheaper just to get my Grips in your guys hands. I make an Awesome product, I need to build a customer base. The J-frame and K-frame grips sound like a $ 50-75 based on wood quaility, medallions ,etc.

*Also I will pay for Silver membership as soon as someone buys a set of my grips....I have had 4 sets of N-frame Square "cokes" for sell in the Accsescories for sale section since labor day. I DON'T KNOW HOW #2 hasn't been sold yet.

I have a really nice piece of thick figured rosewood wich I can't use til i get a Bandsaw, need to sale grips to get bandsaw.... you get the picture ... does anyone still want COCOBOLO....I have been wood shoping on ebay and need to stock up on some of the exotics . Also there is a set of SANDERSON Kframe target grips for sale on ebay. The guy has them labeled as Oversize Target... lol

Just putting this out there so don't smack my hand please,....

Why couldn't the grip panels be made with the screw cup in different size and have a way to part off your favorite revolver cartridge head or rim section parted off and inset. the flash hole is already a perfect screw size. That way you can embellish and show your pride for "X" chambering. This wouldn't work for Rim fire of course. Hell in about 1 hr I or a friend could part off about 500 or many more case heads using the ole Hardige Collete (SP) lathe. Yes this would be alot of brass chucking in and out. But I'd do it fer you guys on this forum.

These look great. Good job.

THANK YOU... THAT WAS AFTER THE FIRST LAYER OF FINISH. THEY LOOK AMAZING NOW ... ALL THE CURL SHOWS THROUGH. You are the first person to show any interest in those N -frame round ( I think I am going to call them "SKULLCRACKER COMBATS" ) grips. They hapen to be my favorite grips to shoot. The little pinky extension reminds me of the skullcracker on the old Merwin hullbert revolvers.

If you could produce a pair of lightly figured walnut or Goncalo Alves grips for a square butt K-frame, with medallions and "Coke" profile and checkering with the classic large diamond and still stay under $100, I believe you could sell all you could make. Is that in the range of what you are considering?

A Roper design would be welcome, but maybe not quite as wide. I love the Pachmayr Compact idea, all my students seem to like that grip, but I'd like it in wood, with a thicker front portion to fill in under the trigger guard bow, then taper down to the front corner of the grip frame. Deacon Deason also made some awesome grips that would be worth imitating/duplicating.

It Would be hard to get cut checkering and medallions on a set of grips for under a $100
Eagle's Heritage is cut checkered without medallions, for $99.95
Medallions cost me $20 with limited supply
Maybe if they were made in china...LOL

.........Lately i have been working on this roundbutt design J frame

I lke the looks of your j-frame grips, except for the "skull-cracker"-shaped extension. For a RB j I like a 2-finger-sized boot grip, anything bigger makes it just that much tougher to conceal. A set of those in rosewood or coco would be sweet, no medallions needed. I have a set of Ahrend j-frame boots, they're nice but a ittle too flat. I like some palm swell like my badgers have.
For those who like a larger grip for the j-frame, a good grip shape to emulate would be the old Fitz "gunfigher" grips. I just bought a pair off gunbroker in genuine duramite stag & they fit the hand nicely, although they're a bit large for concealed carry. The Siles #711 grips are similarly shaped, but with a closed backstrap.

A few grips ready to sell. This is a pic in the morning light. I will post better soon. I am able to sand out 1 set Every day after work. While the finishing takes 3-4 days to achieve a consistent thickness.. I am able to sand on another set... of these j fame I have 10 more sets ready to sand. I have 5 k- frame that I will be roughing out this weekend also... I look to be about 2 weeks(or less) out on posting pics for the k-frame...

The gunfighter idea is a good one... I have been looking at franzite and Fitz on eBay. I have a n -frame franzite nothumbrest set that is very slim...like cokes with no palmswell... the shipped to me last week. I really can't wait to try those in wood.
I will buy a set of j gunfighters too. I have read several articles praising the design.

Really nice. I like that you are plugging the screw hole on one side. This thread is great timing. I'm looking for some custom wood open back, covered front, covered bottom round-butt concealed combat grips. I've owned and liked the offerings from Spegel, Ahrends and Collins (the later not making grips anymore apparently), and was thinking about trying Nill or Keith Brown for my 66 f-comp, which is next in line to get new custom wood grips. However they are significantly more $$$ (with the Browns absolutely out of range, although they are beautiful). If the quality and design are excellent, then I have no problem paying $100 or a bit more.

I prefer symmetrical, bookmarked grain if quartersawn, and of course marbled grains like ironwood are amazing to look at. I also prefer woods with SD near or above 1 (ironwood, cocobolo, ebony, etc.).

Stippling or checkering is a nice option to have, and I really like how Spegel and Hakan Pek are able to stipple over really nice grain and yet still have that nice grain show through.
