The recent acquisition of a very neat Savage A17 has made me a fan of the .17HMR cartridge.

I looked at a few rimfire bolt guns in the LGS, and both the Savage and Ruger offerings seemed to be similar, with the nod in smoothness to the Ruger.

Does anyone here have any experience with the Ruger American Series in rimfire? I see plenty of decent reviews, with the majority of dings seeming to come from the 'cheap-feeling' plastic stock.

The modular stock/comb and rotary mags are very appealing features in a budget rifle, but I would be very interested in hearing some firsthand impressions.

Thanks !

Well I bought the R/A in the Compact 22 magnum version and could not be happier. I don't think the stock feels chinzy or cheap at all. Very accurate although I know the 17 shoots very tight groups but I like the idea of the 40-45 grain bullets for taking varmints at woods ranges. Gun is light at 5.4 lbs and the high polish bluing [black oxide] is done very well. Often priced around $270. Very handy with that 18 inch tube. Just my impression.

I have the .22LR version of RAR with a thirty dollar scope and it shoots silver-dollar sized groups at 100yds off a bench. I am a novice, so I don't know if thats good, but I'm happy with it. Used a bunch of different ammo without any issues, about 900 rounds so far. Found a great price at Academy on a triple pack of spare mags on sale.

I also have a RAR in .22lr and keep 9 shots out of 10 in a 1" square at 50 yards, using bulk ammo like Blazer and the dreaded Golden Bullets.

For an inexpensive hunting rifle, it does just fine by me.
