Finally got to try one after shooting handguns for a long time, decided I'd love to have this beast. Guy let me shoot a mag full with a scope and I couldn't miss at 75 yards. However, 2 grand could buy me four Smith revolvers. I don't need a rifle but this one got me thinkin.

I am a Smith fan through and through. In my opinion there is no better handgun made anywhere. That said, I have a SR5.56.

Yea I just checked that....

Try the RRA or Arma-Lite sites they are 1500ish.

I found Ruger SR-556 and S&W M&P from 1000-1500
depending on the model.

Go to wally world (yes, wal mart) colt M4 clones made by colt defense for sale at $1097 without taxes. Think the SIG was about $800 or so.
Windham armory (ex bush master people) about the same price.
For two grand you could get two sigs for the money or one colt and a sig.

If I were going to spend the money on a Ruger AR, I'd go all the way and get one of their piston guns.

I have an AR and two uppers, but I'm not a fan of direct gas impingement. My preference is for piston operation.

A friend has one of the Ruger piston guns and seems to like it.

Go with the Smith M&P15 Sport.

I've less than $700 in this set-up. It will shoot as good (MOA) as my buds high end Colt HBAR or his match grade AR with all the 20" floating barrel stuff. The Sport is absolutely amazing!

My ARs are SHTF guns. I want true military grade and as light as possible. The one you posted looks like a varmint gun or benchrest shooter. This is fine if it is want you want it for. It would be front heavy for shooting offhand and it would be heavier than needed if you run and gun.

Put me down as a NO vote on piston guns. Nobody's piston gun has parts that interchange with another manufacturer. Also, they are heavier. IMO, this is just an attempt to "improve" on a 50 year old proven design.

You can buy uppers to make the gun into any configuration you like.
If you buy a regular AR-15 M4, you can add a 24" Wylde SS upper from PSA for $570. Of course, you'd have to add a scope also with either gun.

^^^jaykellog,

Given it is certainly a bench rest or recreational rifle.

I never knew it existed from S&W's P.C.

I posted it as conversation.

May I ask what complete military grade,
light weight, rifle you suggest?

I have a problem with building rifles due to
warranties and different manufacture's tolerances.

Or is that conception a misunderstanding?

Supposedly, there are several uppers and lowers
that are truly mil-spec. Thus, product universality
would be standardized. Any manufacturers or
mail orders you would suggest?

Doesn't this vary between AR-15 A2 and A4
involving the optical options?

Are there other differences worth noting besides
optics like piston systems?

AR-15 vs. M4???

Thanks,
Alex

AR's are parts guns Why mess with any of them other than a Colt? Everyone makes them now. Sure almost all of them work fine for the average Joe. SW makes a lot of different ones. The Sport may be just fine, where is the forward assist? They are less expensive for a reason.

Just one of several variations. Military proven.

I would suggest a Colt or BCM. I have a BCM mid length. That is, the gas port is farther down the barrel and the gun cycles a little lass harshly. One of the beauties of the AR platform is the parts interchange. This is why I advise against a piston gun. I bought mine from the Gun Gallery in Jacksonville. I understand Walmart has Colts. You might look at GT Distributors. I believe they have a LE-6920 for under a grand.
Regarding the A2 vs the A4, the original A2 has a fixed carry handle with a sight built in. I have one that I built from a mix of surplus parts and new parts. It is a copy of an '80s M16 (semi of course). Later A2s had 16 inch barrels, but mine has a 20" bbl. The A2 has a fixed stock (like the S&W you posted the link to.)

Some folks buy an AR and hang a lot of stuff on it. IMO this defeats the purpose of the gun. As I said, you can buy an A4 carbine and later buy a different upper. If you keep the cal at .223/5.56 you can use the same BCG and charging handle. I bought a suppressor and I wish I had bought a .300 upper and a 30 cal suppressor. It really barks, but you can shoot without ear muffs.
