Ruger MKII Target ETA: Volquartzen trigger kit

Picked it up from my FFL after lunch. Outside looks to be 90%+ and the inside is pretty filthy. This one has been shot a bit since it was last cleaned. Have it sitting in a bucket of Ed's Red and I will see about cleaning it while I install the Volquartzen trigger kit. Although, it does have a pretty good trigger as is. I will have to measure it before I get to taking it apart. Not bad for just over $400 taxed/shipped/transferred.

Added the Volquartzen trigger kit and the trigger went from a nice 3.75lb to a very much nicer just below 2.5lb

My Favorite Metallic Silhouette Gun

Back in the day when I shot Hunter Pistol .22 Metallic Silhouette, my trusty MK II Govt was the bomb. It was way more accurate than me and very reasonably priced in the early 90's. Mine had a marginal trigger which I worked over to a point of reasonableness, maybe not Vohlquartsen good, but O.K. Taking that thing apart and re-assembling scores of times to carefully polish sear and hammer made me an honorary gunsmith. Not.

My bull barrel Mark II is my favorite.22 handgun and it shoots wayyyyyyy better than I.

Very nice. I have the Mk. II Government Target Model, which is quite accurate, but muzzle heavy. I think you will really enjoy shooting that Mk. II Target Model.

Congratulations on your buy. You will really enjoy that Ruger. I have a MkI Target that I bought in 1974 or so. Still have it, still shoot it. Have taught my wife, my kids, their spouses and now the grandkids safe firearms handling and shooting using that Ruger. It’s all original, save the grips, and still is a tack driver. Great pistol.

I have the same model only in stainless steel. They're great shooters and I really like the balance.
You may not be aware of this but the triggers on the target model Mark II's come with an overtravel adjustment screw right from Ruger. It can be a bit of a pain to access but when the guns apart its not too bad .
I adjusted mine ,added a pre travel screw and a Volquartsen sear for a very nice trigger pull.

Very nice! I have a MKII Target I got from a friend that had a grand total of 10 rounds through it! Also a MKIII Slabside Competition and an early (1955) Standard.

Not to hijack this thread but inquiring minds need to know! I was given an early MK1 in excellent condition and ended up selling it. I am a lefty. I didn't like the fact that it had no controls on the passenger side for me. The Mk-4 has that plus being easier to disassemble and reassemble. Can the MK-4 be set up to be as good? I had the light weigh Got model for some time but sold it thinking that I would rather have the bull barrel Target model.

Rugers target pistols are just that: target pistols. They aren’t as fancy as the pistols that cost three times as much, but perform as well.

The little standard 4” barrel model is particularly useful with a small scope. This is the first gun that seems designed for a small scope.

Up until a year or 2 ago, my Smith 617 with a EER Leupold scope was the rimfire handgun that I shot the best,,

THEN, Volquartsen has a clearance on their solid stainless barrels,,
$225 delivered,,

I could not resist,,



This gun was a slab side Govt Target,, until I put the Volquartsen barrel on it.

Well, I can shoot this thing lights out compared to the 617,,
Shooting a 2" swinging target at 25 yards,, I get 50% more hits with the Volquartsen, than the 617.

AND, the Ruger has a non magnified red dot, rather than a scope.

People talk about the 617 being nose heavy,,
it weighs nothing compared to this solid stainless monster,, I LOVE it!!

I think the gun is a great shooter because it is so heavy,,

Now, the same Volquartsen barrel is aluminum, with a stainless barrel liner.

I think the solid stainless barrel scared customers,, not me!!

I have a Mk I 6 7/8” target.

I also have a Mk II 5” target as well as a Mk II Govt.

Do I like them better than my K-22 and 17-3? Probably not, but they shoot every bit as well.

I still shoot my 617 better... but I really enjoy my Mk2's... the Stainless one is my most accurate one of course... the Mk1 was my late father's first handgun...

The MKII Slab Side was my first ever Ruger,,
I bought it brand new for $250,, with the rings,, the scope came later.

The 10 inch was a pawn shop find,, no one wanted it,, according to the shop owner,,
I got that one for $250 also,,

Both were purchased a LONG time ago,,

The Slab Side has a gold titanium nitride coated sear,
Volquartsen used to sell those,,
The gold titanium nitride coating acts like a built in lubricant.

My Mk1 bull barrel target has a crisp and light 1911 like trigger pull.
Factory (1981) No need for mods or volquartsen!
