Ruger question...

My buddy that buys property room guns came up with another one I couldn't resist. New Model Single Six with some cosmetic wear, but mechanically great. The price was right at <$140 OTD.

So I have three questions. Are they all convertible? How does one tell if the cylinder is LR or Magnum? Can I buy whichever cylinder I don't have from Ruger? I couldn't find anything like that on their website.

No, they are not all convertible and cylinders may need to be fitted.

The caliber is usually marked on the cylinder of convertible models.

The 22 Magnum cartridge is considerably longer than the long rifle. If you can't tell by looking or comparing with another gun just see if a magnum cartridge will fit.

I believe they've all been convertible since the mid-sixties.

I believe there is a groove in the breech-face of the Long Rifle cylinder, but the Magnum face is smooth, but without going and digging one out of the safe I'm not absolutely sure. The really best way is to remove the cylinder and attempt to put a magnum in it. If it fits, it's magnum. If it won't, it's long rifle.

Ruger will sell you the cylinder. At least they used to. But they won't just "sell you a cylinder". You send them the gun and they will fit a spare cylinder to it. Barrels and cylinders are "factory fitted parts".

If its a new model it would be a convertible. the magnum cylinders are marked 22 magnum.
