I just traded into this gun. I know, I know, it's not a S&W, but since I already have a three inch Model 13 in nickel, and a 19-3 blued snubby, I felt this one had a place as well. I used to have a snub Speed Six in .357 that I got rid of for some crazy reason, and I've wanted to replace it ever since. This is as close as I could find. Traded my SR9 straight up for it; didn't have much in that gun, and it never fit me anyway. Got a set of Ruger wood target grips bought new off their site for sixteen bucks coming, and found a set of service grips in the grip box at the LGS today. Going back Monday to make sure of fit; just hope this grip screw will work with them, since theirs is M.I.A. What do you guys think of these guns? I'm hoping it shoots and carries as good as my short barreled K frames.

Those old Ruger service revolvers are every bit as cool as the M&Ps from the same era. Every snub fan should have a short Six.

Absolutely the strongest little gun out there! I don't think you can break them. I had one and really liked it. The only drawback seemed to be the weight.

They are great guns. I have several of them and like them alot. As you would suspect, my favorites are still Smith's, but I would not hesitate to carry and use the Rugers. Joe

I have a .357 Security Six 4'' one of the very first made, I ordered it as soon as I found out they were building them.

I know they changed the grip part of the frame sort of early in the production run and the grips ARE NOT interchangeable between early and later models. Make sure depending on what gun you have your getting the right grips.

I have one too, or rather my son has it now. Good little shooter and a very solid gun. Trigger is not as smooth or light as my smiths, but can be improved greatly. I like the look and feel much better than the current GP100

I love mine. It's not as refined as a Smith, but it is strong and as foolproof as a gun can be.

I have a 4 inch that our department evaluated back in 1982.

They decided to stay with S&W,(they bought Model 65's) and those of us that carried these for a year got to purchase them for the whopping price of $100 if we wanted them.

Good weapon and it's served me well many times over the years.

Absolutely great guns. As much as I love my K frame 357s, I like my Sixes more.

They can handle nearly any 357 you can find without pause and are much easier to carry than either an L frame or GP100. I dearly wish they were still being made.

I think you did great! That's a solid gun and honestly I think you got the better end of the trade! I still have more S&W guns but my Ruger collection is on the grow! I'm discovering an insatiable appetite for older Ruger revolvers too. Its starting to rival my Smith and Wesson appetite. I recently picked up a 9mm Ruger Speed Six. I'm on the look out for the .357 Mag Speed Six, and a Security six exactly like yours. Well Done my friend and thanks for posting here for us to enjoy!

Doesn't make a lot of sense to use the Ruger target grips on the snub version. They do feel very good in the hand, and I'd use them on a four or six-inch gun.

Pachmayr makes/made a round-butt grip for the Speed-Six that feels great and hides better. Don't think they have a square-butt version that size, though.

The rub with the design is that many I've handled had a slightly loose crane fit, and you can feel some motion. I think that's why Manurhin added a sort of crane lock to their version of this gun, and why Ruger designed a front cyinder crane lock as he did on the GP-100.

I had a Security-Six with six-inch bbl. that I loved. Had to sell it and other items when my ex let me have my daughter and we had to move to a better school district.

Like the M-66 with that barrel, it gives full .357 power with just moderate bulk. It fit a Safariland M-29 holster that'd also take the equivalent M-19/66.

Assuming that a particuar gun is properly fitted, I think these Rugers are terrific. I suspect the loose crane issue has to do with the manufacturing process and the lack of hand-fitting cranes to indvidual frames, where tolerances match. When they do, all is happiness. :)

Be aware that serial numbers beginning with 150 use different grips than later guns. You can tell them also by the sloped look at the top of the grip, whereas later guns look like the S&W handle there. Controls recoil better.

I much admire the GP-100 and SP-101 and have both. But I'd buy a Speed-Six or Sec-Six with a four or six inch bbl. in a heartbeat if I had the money when I found a nice one in stainless.

I have heard that Ruger no longer services these guns, as they're out of parts. You might want to think about that.

I have a Speed Six and an SP101... why Rugers are under appreciated and berated by many is beyond me. The Speed Six (in fact all of my Rugers) has been stupidly reliable, trigger pull improved vastly with use and the addition of a Wolff spring kit.

More often than not I find myself using it, instead of my 19-4 2-1/2 bbl. I like the extra recoil absorbing heft that the Speed Six brings to the table.

When my dad first got his badge back in the day, on his tiny part time cop with a family salary, he bought a service six. First gun I ever shot. Cut my teeth on the thing, and he still has it.

I credit that gun with being the reason I'm a wheelgun fan instead of the bottom feeders everyone else my age prefers.

I carry a 66 ND 4" iwb, when I found a Security six ss 4" with the smaller grip I picked it up. These two guns are almost twins but the trigger on the 66 is just a little bit better. The one thing I don't like about the SS is when firing .357 mags the trigger gaurd hits my knuckel with both the small and oversize grips I got from Ruger.

I just added this Ruger 2-3/4 to the collection. Made in 1982 and never fired. Going into the safe while I look for a shooter. Add my 4" as well.
