Hey guys
Got a new 686 -6 shoots like a champ but have noticed some surface rust on hammer and trigger. The rust comes off easily with oil and a brush but it still makes me sick. This gun sits in safe next to my -1 which has no issue. Is there anything I can coat these parts with to protect from rust. Thanks for any help.

Eezox had always worked for me. Just follow the directions on the can.

This comes up often on the forum. That probably was not rust, but the case hardening. That's the way it's supposed to look and lots of folks like it. But not a big deal.

I was not crazy about the case-hardened finish on the hammer and trigger either. I polished them with a Birchwood-Casey, Lead Remover cloth, and it brightened it up.

I've got two -6's, and they both came like that, and after I brightened them up, they stayed that way without any more attention than a wipe with an oiled cloth after cleaning.

Thanks for the tips guys. While we're talking 686 passed on 6in 686-1 and 6in 586-1 both for $750 each in very good condition. Seemed a lil high to me but then again they don't make them like they used to. What are yall seeing them for

Mil.comm MC2500 synthetic oil, and/or, TW25B synthetic grease. There are some YouTube videos on how well this stuff works in preventing rust. Used for military applications.

I did the opposite and used bluing remover and a light polish on the hammers and blued the triggers. I think the triggers work well with the front and rear sights.

Looks like rust to me

Yup, looks like rust to me too. But as stated, it's easy to remove, so long as it's not ignored and turns into a pit, and easy to protect. I like Rig grease because of the results of a test run in Gun Test magazine that showed it to be almost as effective as cosmoline, plus unlike oils, it's not effected by gravity.

Used gun prices seem to be somewhat regional. Around here those prices would be a bit high for condition noted without boxes and such..

An occasional wipedown with a lightly oiled (any oil) cotton cloth has worked for me for more than fifty years. No need to put the gun in anything or to perform exotic rituals.
