Hey anyone What years did Smith use the S prefix on model 10 M&P ser#? I found one in almost 100% shape with the box and instruction sheet at the pawn shop last week and would like to know when it was made. The ser# is S 864xxx.I think it should be around 1946 or 47 but I may be way off base. Thanks for any help on this .papabyrd

i think you are right about the time period. the S numbers lasted til about march of 48 when the C numbers began. they are well made revolvers and a real joy to shoot. lee

Thanks Lee I am looking forward to putting a few rounds through it but almost hate to because I don`t think it has ever been fired.

Great score. I love 'em.
A true Transition gun.
Which box is it in- gold or maroon? If maroon, which one- two piece, or hinged top? If maroon, what color is the end label- blue or green? If gold, the number will be in black grease pencil on the bottom, if maroon it will be on the bottom in pencil.

FWIW - I have a slightly latter number, S 866065, that lettered as being shipped on January 31, 1947, to the Marshall Fields Store in Chicago, IL, of all places.

Here it is with two of the type boxes Lee listed, I don't have the hinged type. I think these immediate post war guns and ones from the 50's are the cat's meow. You could probably find a more used example to shoot if you wanted to save the NIB example.

Papabyrd, The following guns shipped as shown: #S862474 2/2/47; #S867953 2/18/47; #S868227 Sept. '47; and S877794 in Mar. '47. S&Ws were never shipped in serial number sequence, however in the 1946-47 period demand for guns was very high and they did not stay on the factory shelves very long after being finished, so your estimate of 1946-47 is probably pretty close as to when your gun left the factory.

Thanks for all the info. The color of the box is gold with blue letters mine is not as nice as the one in the picture but it is all together
and it is worn around the edges.I think where it was kept for a long time had a bug problem and they worked on the paper some (there were remains of roach bodys in the box). Thanks again for the help.Maybe I can return the favor some time. papabyrd
