I have a S&W 1 that I think is the 1st model 3rd issue...there are no serial numbers visible and it appears it was polished...I assume the serial number was on the butt...any place else to look? Thanks, Ed

Ed,
I'm suprized that some of our more knowledgable antique collectors haven't jumped in here.
Your little No.1 appears to be a No.1, 1st Issue and either a type 3rd, 4th, 5th or 6th type. [see SWCA 3 for how to tell the difference]
I agree that it looks refinished and quite heavily polished. Still a nice example of rare gun.
The most interesting part of the outfit is the gutta percha case. It appears to be in excellent condition and if original is probably worth more than the gun.

Probably the reason you are not getting responses may be that the picture doesn't show up on my computer, nor one I was using earlier today. Must be different programs.

The pictures show up on my computer, using the Winkflash link, however they are very poor pictures that do not show, even when blown up, the assembly symbol on the barrel, cylinder and frame. No picture of the butt serial, which is the only place the serial number appears, so you don't know if this is a copy or a real S&W, whoever took the pictures is not a gun person, or else he is very clever and doesn't show anything that would give away the gun's origin as a copy. The case looks good and it's not a replica. Ed.

I took the photos, so guilty, I suppose my skills are lacking...advise what shots you need and I'll try again...email me directly and I'll get some to you and will try to post better shots from now on...I have a lot of guns to go through and I just hurried with what I considered decent images. Ed

Sadly, that is the issue, no serial number...on the butt where I am sure it should be it's highly polished and no numbers are left. Ed
