randy1006;

From everything I've seen & read 1006s are ultra reliable guns. If you're not yet a reloader 10mm ammo prices will force you to start. That's a good thing. The sooner you quit buying factory ammo the more fun you'll have.

The DuPont powder company has kept free reloading data pamphlets on gun store counters for a long time. A while back they were tan colored. The first load listed under 10mm in that issue is for the 135 grain Sierra JHC and 800X powder. I've seen several 1006s chronographed firing the maximum charge and they all achieved the published 1,600 fps. That's had to match with a .357 mag.

thanks for the info, definitely is a keeper

That's a nice 1006. The S&W 3rd gen 10mm pistols are very reliable and accurate. Enjoy your 1006 and k22's idea about reloading is a good one. You can custom load your ammo to your likes for recoil and velocity.

how much money I have to spend to start reloading 10 mm?

That depends on whether you will only buy new and if you're happy starting out with the kind of simple slow press that was what 99.9% of reloaders used back when a lot of us started. Someone who has purchased tools recently can give more accurate numbers but setting up with the popular Dillion 550B or a Hornady progressive that will reload a few hundred rounds an hour might be around $400 new. Lee prides themselves on giving better value for the dollar. I'll bet I could get an old single stage press, powder measure & scale, carbide die set & the very necessay reloading manual used at gun shows for $100-$150 but I like poking around gun shows so the time involved isn't a factor.

For the one calaiber, I would estimate around $150 - $200 to get going with a basic turret style press. Your biggest challenge will be finding affordable 10mm brass. Once you overcome that, you are set for a while, as the brass is reloaded many times.

As far as reloading goes, check out your local garage/yard sales. A few weeks ago I picked up an RCBS RC2 press, 10000 SP primers, 1000 SPM primers, 3000 LP primers, 10000 SR primers, 4000 LR primers, about 5000 assorted bullets, 400 lbs of mixed unsorted brass, 26 sets of dies and 22 lbs of seven various powders. I dumped all (about 2 lbs) of the open powder in the garden and kept the 18 un-opened 1lb cans. Sold off 14 of the 18 lbs of powders that I will NEVER use along with the mixed brass and the SPM primers. All of the above purchased items cost me the princely sum of $150.00. After adding back the items that I sold I came out ahead of the game by about $250.00. I will be gifting the new/near new dies that I can't use to friends that have pistols/rifles in the calibers of the dies that I can not use.

Welcome to the 10MM fraternaty , if your looking for real preformance you definitely have to get into reloading . Start simple and slowly .

Owning a 10mm is like any other addictive activity. Reloading is a must. It's why I began 15 years ago. I love my 1006. They are accurate and reliable.

Welcome to the club.
