Lately, I've had the hankering for another 10MM for use as a 'woods-walking gun'. After 20+ years of service/use, how are S&W's 10MMs holding up?

10mm durability

I have a 1066 that is outstanding. It's accurate and has given me no problems whatsoever. All the information I've ever seen is that S&W 10mm's are some of the strongest.

How are they holding up? Like a tank. Normal, proper maintenance, they could almost live forever.

I am still working with many of 10xx series, especially the S&W1006 (factory adj. sights)...I use it to test all of my top performance 10mm loads and also testing of 40S&W and 9x25 Dillon from my Bar-Sto Match Grade conversion barrels. The only upgrade I did, was to utilize the Wolff 22lb recoil spring which works with all of the ammo and conversions. Its accuracy is great using any of the cartridges listed above. I do regular cleaning and lubricating each shooting secession.

This gun has been 100% since day one, Mar. 1990. If there was a drawback it would be the lack of spare & aftermarket parts.

One of the forum members here (Bad_Man_One) is preparing to start making some various barrels for these fine pistols and I am going to give them a try as soon as I can obtain them.

Best of luck with yours!

I don't know how you could wear one out.
These are tough, tough, reliable guns.

If it were a cop gun drawn from a holster multiple times a day and the decocker (1006, 1066) flipped off and on multiple times a day for 20 years, the finish might get worn and sear release lever may wear out. The finish can be taken care of with a Scotch Brite pad and the sear release lever is a $2.50 part that S&W will repair for free.

I have two Smith 10mm pistols. One is a Kentucky State Police 1076 that saw ~12 years of hard service and untold rounds through it before it came into my possession. Built in 1991, it's still going strong 20 years later. The only repair I've had to make to it was replace its original extractor and extractor spring. Yeah, they're definitely durable and I've no doubt they'll both outlive me by a long stretch. ;)

Don't forget the 610 revolver, with that one it'll be up to your grandchildren to wear it out. Another plus for the wheelgun is that you can feed in the 40 S&W for cheap thrills and save the hot 10mm loads for hunting or larger wild critters that might think you're dinner. Note, that wild critter comment doesn't apply for a Grizzly or Kodiak, for the really big Bruins you want something a good bit more powerful.

I have a 1006 & a 1076, both are excellent shooters. I reloaded a few hundred 10mm silvertips and that is what I mainly shoot. Great and strong guns, shot both a lot and have had zero mechanical problems nor any FTF issues.

I have a 1066 and a 1076 and they are both still in excellent shape. These are tough guns that will last a lifetime plus.

A woods pistol is exactly why I got mine. Its supported chamber can handle loads (like some of the SwampFox) that other pistols can not. They really are built like tanks.

I liked my 1006 so much I got two (fixed sights up front, adjustable in back):

I have an uncle who is retired KSP Trooper. I remember him carrying the 1076 forever. He ended up buying his issue weapon when he retired. I know that KSP had the ammo specially made. They used a Speer Gold Dot Bullet and a case that was head stamped KSP, 10MM.

The 1006 and 1076 I have are still going strong..........(my father purchased them when they first came ou)t..............cause they are unfired and NIB!!!!

I love my 1006. Heck, I'm still trying to find a 1066 when I actually have money. Between the 1006, an rz-10, and a block 20, it is the softest shooter and I've put some hot loads through it.
