As in all 1911s the grip safety rests against the rear of the trigger, preventing any rearward movement of the trigger. The FPS is an add-on safety not in the orginal 1911 design which prevent the firing pin from contacing the primer if the pistol is dropped and the hammer is hit.

The S&W 1911s use a Swartz safety. The grip safety is what deactivates the firing pin block.

Colt used the Swartz safety in some 1911s in the late '30s and early '40s because it made the pistol safe by blocking the firing pin and didn't muck with the trigger pull.

The grip safety will still be there, but as there will be no firing pin block, there is no need for the addtional "linkage" to deactivate the firing pin block. In other words, it will be a "Series 70."

The grip safety will do the same job it has since 1911 - stop the trigger unless the grip safety is depressed. You did not think that the grip safety was there originally to deactivate a firing pin block, did you? The original 1911 did not have the firing pin block.
