Has S&W ever made a prototype revolver in 25-20 caliber. I saw on one forum a vague reference to both a Colt and a S&W but have never seen one. I believe CAS shooters are allowed to shoot rifles in 25-20 which is suppose to be a pistol cartridge. Anybody ever heard of one of these.

I have, many years past, read that Colt experimented with a revolver in .25-20, and there may have been a very few special order Single Action Army revolvers in this caliber. I have never seen any reference that I recall to S&W ever doing anything with the cartridge.

Let's clear one thing up. The .25-20, .32-20, .38-40 and .44-40 and earlier W.C.F. designations of the same cartridges are, and always have been, RIFLE cartridges in spite of the fact that soon after their original introduction (.32-20 and .44-40) in the Model 1873 Winchester and later the .38-40 and .25-20 Colt and other manufacturers adapted their revolvers to use the Winchester Rifle cartridges. Any reference to any of these cartridges in a rifle as "Pistol Caliber" is totally erroneous.

According to SCSW3, they made some N-frame prototypes in 256 Winchester (basically a necked-down 357 case, intorduced in the early 60's) and they also made a few N-frame 22 Hornet prototypes (alloy frames, if I recall correctly); no 25-20's that I'm aware of. It's reported that they had flame cutting problems with the 22 Hornets. -S2

One of the gun magazines had an article many years ago about a Colt New Service or Army Special in 25/20. If I recall, it was experimental, and may have been a one off.
