Today, I found another pawn shop treasure. Time to time I patrol the local pawn shops in my area in search of people that sell their firearms and didn't know what they actually had. Today's find was a S&W Model 28-2 in utterly immaculate un-reblued condition. Fired, but so little, there's no turn ring but there is light plasma scoring on the finish at the frame bridge near the forcing cone. Cylinder is solid as a brick at trigger pull. Fire-blued pinned hammer and perfect wood grips. No box or papers. Price they're asking for is 580 plus tax. I know the price seems good and that's likely because I live in Podunkville where there's not a huge collector base. I'm sure its worth $580, but I see similar firearms on GB with no bids and no reserve at lower prices. Firearm comes by itself, no box, cleaning kit, or papers. Barrel marked "patrol man."

Next question is production date. Serial number is N541xxx (last three digits omitted). I'm relying on Christmas money to put me over the top on getting this.

Another pawn had a very-good-plus condition S&W645 square trigger guard, no metal damage but some light blemishing, one factory mag, fixed standard sights, Pachmyr single-panel grips for $400. I have one already in better shape so its not really a contender for the Christmas cash but the 28-2 is.

You didn't mention barrel length but for $580 in the condition you describe I don't see how you could go wrong. Someone will get closer with a date but 1978 is probably close. Last nice one I bought was a year or two ago, six inch with box/papers, priced at $700 although it was a trade deal so actual cost was more like $600. Good luck.

$580? Grab it! The P&R N-frame Smiths aren't going to be getting any cheaper and its hard to find a really nice one for less than $600 (actually often more $)

Welcome to the FORUM! I have a 6" no dash from 1960. $580 is a good price especially if it is a 4". Either way, they are good guns

I like pictures, got any of your new pistol?
Steve

I would suggest offering $500 OTD, especially if it has a six inch barrel. Be prepared to pay or walk away. But if you really like it, $580 is not a bad price, whatever the barrel length.

It's a six-inch barrel. The only reason I am considering this is the absolute pristine condition of the revolver. The bluing and wood look like brand new, and I checked carefully, this doesn't appear reblued and the bore has strong, bright lands and grooves.

Pictures I don't have. As I've said, I'm banking on a small amount of Christmas money to round out the sum. I also have a 19-3 on layway, so I'm a tad thinly spread here on my mad money.

I can add pictures once the beasts are in-hand.

Remember too, that you need to include the shipping, insurance and transfer fee into the final price of an on line gun...Plus, you don't get to see what it's actually like until it gets to you. If it's a ***, then you either have to return it, if there's an inspection period, or take it if it was sold "as-is"...Being able to hold one and look at it is worth the price of admission...Good luck, an Merry Christmas to all who read this...

Mar - May time frame 1979. And, if you haven't already bought it, I wouldn't waste any time going back for it. At least ask them if there's any "wiggle room" in the price. Like what's the absolute bottom line out the door? Now, go get it!! And, don't forget the pics. You may not know it, but we LOVE pics!! :D

I wouldn't have been able to resist the deal if it was a 4" gun, and I would only be able to resist a 6" because I have one already. If I was "in the money", I would probably buy this one, and sell my "inferior" one on GB.

I don't think there will be any shipping & insurance since the pawn shop is in his area.

That's probably a good price and if you take care of it you can always get all (or most) of your money back.

Okay, here's the 28-2. Had just enough Christmas money to get me there.

The shine you see on the fourth image's cylinder and arm are the flash reflection off the oil rubbed it down with after getting it today. Utterly gorgeous example.

No turning ring on the cylinder and no ablation of the finish around the firing pin hole. Some plasma erosion of the bluing at the cylinder bridge near the forcing cone, but its not completely gone and the face of the forcing cone is immaculate; no blue wear.

Pulled the wood grips off, the metal underneath the wood is in equal pristine shape. No rust, pitting or finish ablation from being held.

Next in my sights is paying off the 19-3 Georgia State Patrol revolver I have on lay-away. If anyone's interested in actually seeing it, I'll post pics otherwise it will be oiled, cleaned, fired with 38+P a couple times and cared for.... my prrrrreciousssss. ;)

Congrats! Or I mean Merry Christmas! Can't get much cleaner than that.

Here's its slightly younger sibling, 580,0XX, that I opened yesterday.

According to sources I've gleaned, this is a latter-part 1978 production 28-2 I scored. Not bad for a 40-year old privately held firearm.
