Out visiting gun shops today and found at 3906, LNIB with spare mag, cleaning rod and paperwork. Shop wanted $500, shipped to my FFL (I'm visiting this area from another part of the country). This looks like a very nice pistol - literally heavy enough to handle hotter 9mm loads. However, I'm unfamiliar with this model, and the price seems strong for this model (I'm really looking around for a pre LS/NL 3913). Any input you could offer regarding your experiences with this model will help me assess this opportunity. Thanks!

I think the price is too high for that gun and I also think you will be happier with the 3913. Holsters will be easier to find for the 3913. The 3913 is also a much lighter weight gun. Right after the 3913 was introduced the 3906 was gone from the lineup.

XAVMECH,
$500 seems a little high.
I own both a 3906 and 3913 & 3914.
The 3906 is as heavy as a brick, if you want one for personal carry.

Stick with your original quest to locate a nice pre LS/NL 3913.
I believe you will be more satisfied and happy.

I shoot more accurately with my 3913 and 3914.
Plus they are more compact and lightweight to carry compared
to the 3906.

$500 shipped, for a LNIB 3906 is a little bit high for a 3906, IMO. Not all that high though.....maybe not high at all considering shipping is in there too.

When is the last time you saw a 3906??

I saw one with adjustable sights in 2006. No box, no extra mag, $475 OTD. I passed because I felt the price was a little high. I didn't see another 3906 till this past spring. $450 OTD with nothing else. I jumped on it!!

I"m a big fan of the 3913. I carry my 3913 daily off duty....and sometimes on court days. Great little carry gun.

My 3906 makes every range trip though. I'm going to shoot some IDPA with the 3906 too. The 3906's heavier frame makes shooting +P+ feel like 22's. Accurate little tack driver too. More accurate than my 3913 with the load it likes.

The 3906 just fits and feels perfect, to me. Points like my model 19 and shoots great.

I love my 3913, but prefer my 3906 for competition and long duration shooting.

I'd advise you to buy it if you like it. They were only made for a few years, and those that have them tend to hold onto them. You may not see another.....at any price.....for quite awhile. Good luck! Regards 18DAI.

I'd suggest that if you're really looking for a 3913, wait for that. But, from what I have seen, at least in my part of the country, $ 500.00 would not be high for a LNIB 3906. Were I still looking for one, I would pay $500 for a LNIB example in a heartbeat. I bought a new 3906 with adjustable sights back when they were in production. It was totally reliable with any and all factory ammo tried and my reloaded ammo. I foolishly traded it off. I looked for years to find another in LNIB condition. All I ever saw at shows or in shops were BEATERS priced in the $400-$550 range. By the time I saw a couple of clean ones for sale on the internet, I was no longer in the market. Excellent, durable, reliable guns in my humble opinion.

If you want a 3906, it is a fair price. Its not a great deal, but the 3rd gen full size 39 series guns in good shape don't come along very often. Of course if you really want a 3913, $500 is on the high side.

I would snap it up. I paid a little more for a NIB example a couple of years ago. What a great little gun! Yes it is heavier than the 3913, but size and flatness of the piece make it easy for me to conceal and carry.

On the plus side, that extra weight brings an all steel pistol that will digest +P without worries or guilt.

Holsters can be difficult, but you can find someone who will make a rig for you.

Last time I checked, Smith had new mags in stock. I picked up an extra six and am good to go.

3913s are often found on the market, the 3906 is an entirely different matter. I would buy another just to have a spare. I always keep an eye open for one.

3906 THANK YOU!

My sincere thanks to all who responded. I've already got a NIB 6904, a pristine 6906, and as I said - am in the hunt for a 3913. Eventually, I'll buy one - it's not an either/or thing. Based on your input, I do believe I'll go ahead with purchasing this 3906 (I'm going back to the shop tomorrow). I'll post the pics when I get it.
Best regards,
Bill (XAVMECH)

One of my favorite S&W pistols and possibly my favorite. S&W dropped the ball on these when they discontinued them, IMO.
Let me see:
Single stack
9mm
stainless steel
Ambi safety
TDA
LNIB
What more could a Smith and Wesson fan ask for.
I don't think 500 shipped is out of line for a LNIB in demand ss pistol (if you break it down 450 for the gun and 50 for shipping or 475 for the gun and 25 shipping its a fair deal either way). You can always get a 3913 series etc, it may be a long long time before you get a chance to buy one of these.
It's a very fair deal. Nobody is making out like a bandit and nobody is getting ripped off.
Hope you get it and good luck with it

FWIW - I'm using a G&G pancake for a S&W99 to carry my 3906. Fits the 3906 like it was made for it.

At the range I'm using a cheap Fobus for a Sig P226. Works well too. Regards 18DAI.

As mentioned, those things are hard to find, let alone purchase. I can't remember the last time I saw; '04, maybe?

The 3906's were only made for 2 years and the amount was small, something like 2,000 pistols. I found one about 5 years ago for $325 unfired with no box. I put night sights on it and shot it. I took 2nd place with it in an IPSC match against the high cap comp guns. I think I'll keep mine.

S&W 3906

It's not an unreasonable price, and like many of the posters mentioned they don't come up for sale all that often. I had the same model that I regretfully sold quite a few years ago. Reliable, accurate, great handling and very nice looking, I loved those adjustable sights. I just missed one last week for $429 in VG condition with two mags. I think it was worth the price. At least I have my 3914 to turn to. Good luck

GOT IT!!

Thanks again to all who replied. Your input was integral to my purchase today of this fine pistol! It appears to be unfired, in the original box with manual, warranty info, cleaning kit, sight adjustment tool and two stainless mags. It should be at my FFL by the time I get home from this trip. I love visiting gun shops when traveling - almost a scavenger hunt. While I have both a 6906 and 6904 that I can carry, the appeal of this gun is its heft, and hopefully accuracy for the range. I'll post some pics of this beauty next week. :)
regards,
Bill

Don't blame it on us - I think you already had your mind made up and were just looking for an excuse!

Great! I never even knew about this gun until I opened this thread. Now I am going to look for one. Damn you smith-wesson forum!!! :mad:You make me spend money on guns I don't even know about!!

:D

Don't feel bad sniper47. I didn't know about the 3906 till I came here. Then it took me several years to track down a fixed sight variant. After shooting it, I love this gun.

Then I read that the late production 3906's had Novak low mount sights. So now I'm looking for one of those.

Then there is the light weight aluminum framed version in blue, the 3904. So of course I need one of those too.

Then I want to get a beater and have the trigger guard rounded, Novak night sights installed, and the frame melonited with a hard chrome slide........it's a disease I tell ya. Regards 18DAI.

Hi,
I just posted a new thread on a 3913 lady smith for $499 I found in a gun shop today. I paid $499 for my 5903. Seems the going price in my part of the country. Third generations are hard to find in California. I might put a hold on the 3913 tomorrow. Am I crazy?
