S&W 44 Magnum Purchase

I have a 629 Classic with a fully lugged barrel and 2x Leupold scope that I purchased in the mid 90s. I had MagnaPort port the barrel and do a trigger job on it. I LOVE THIS GUN! Recoil is significantly reduced which enhances accuracy. I carry it in a chest rig to hunt hogs and deer in Georgia. Much lighter than toting a rifle or a shotgun. Glad to hear you are staying away from the Ruger as I owned one before the Smith and hated it. The only other one I would consider would be Colt Anaconda if you can find one at a reasonable price which is unlikely.

Nothing wrong with a 5" Classic, as has already been mentioned. Get a PC if you like the looks & features, not because it's necessarily made any better than a standard production gun.

BLUEDOT37 IS ON THE MONEY. DO NOT PURCHASE A PC GUN, IF YOU ARE DOING SO, BECAUSE YOU EXPECT A HIGHER LEVEL OF QUALITY. THERE ARE MANY POSTS ON THIS FORUM THAT WOULD DETER YOU FROM THAT LINE OF THINKING.....

ON THE OTHER HAND, IF YOU ARE ENAMORED OF THE FUTURISTIC LINES OF SOME OF THE PC GUNS, THEN BY ALL MEANS, SCRATCH YOUR ITCH ! ! !

Thanks again to all who responded to my post - great information and provided me with valuable input in regard to my decision (have not yet made it though!) Getting ready to head to the woods for opening day of deer season here in Illinois - good time to think sitting in my deer stand ( :

Deer update in Illinois - 10 point buck weighing a bit over 200 pounds live weight on the ground ( : Used an Ithaca Deerslayer 12 gauge with Leupold scope - maybe next year a 44 Magnum of some sort will be used!

Congrats on the fresh venison.
I carry a M-69 and love it.
But if I wanted a dedicated hunting rig a 29 with a 6-8 inch barrel will serve you better.
Or a 10" Contender.

Gorgeous!

The model 69 is a "L" frame 5 shot .44 Magnum mine has 4" barrel and I've added a FastFire 3 optic on the Raptor mount.

I plan on taking it deer hunting this year, lighter to carry than my 629.

Brother that is absolutely gorgeous. Something about a S&W with a 4" barrel that just looks right. At least to me.

Shooting the 44 mag is a blast !! I bought a 629-4 in 4" about a year ago and it's my favorite revolver to shoot. Shooting factory loads can put a hurt'n on ya !! Every now and then I will shoot a box of factory ammo, the rest of the time I shoot the Freedom Munition reloads. I have a 29-2 that is kinda a safe queen, just so darn nice I just shoot the 629 most of the time.

Well after much thinking and deliberation while sitting in my tree stand this weekend I have decided to purchase the 629 Performance Center with 7.5 inch barrel and compensator (formerly called the Light Hunter). It seems like it will be a good all around 44 Mag that I can use 44 specials in for target shooting and magnum loads for deer hunting. Now the quest will be to find the best price - I observed that Bud's Guns has them for $1031 which includes free shipping to my FFL - does anyone know of a better price than this?

Thanks again for all the input on this forum which helped me make my decision!

I hunt with 629-4 and 629-5 Classics (6.5" barrels), both topped with Burris 2X7 Posi Locks! 7 Whitetails (5X5 this year).
Looked at the Stealth Hunter but weight at 67 years old might be to much for me. Give the 629 Classic a look.

I like the early 629 models but not so early they don't have the Endurance Package. It's important for shooting heavier rounds but then I have a 629-2 which was the last model not to have that package. I just avoid heavy rounds. It works great and is very accurate. I can bounce a gallon jug around at 175 yards with mine which has the 8 3/8" barrel. The longer barrel means slight better accuracy. That may be important for a hunting weapon. But a 6" will probably be plenty good enough in the accuracy department.

The PC models aren't all that different from the Classic. But they cost considerable more. I think my Classic is plenty accurate enough.
