Hey guys. I found this at my LGS today & wanted your thoughts and opinions on it. I don't know much about these although I am learning quickly (thanks to this board) about 3rd gens. Does the price look on par? I believe that it only comes with 1 mag & I did not handle it at all.

S&W 457

About $50-75 too high perhaps based on my experience and view of condition

That 639 beside it with rounded trigger guard and adjustable sights may be worth a second look within the same parameters - it would likely clean up nicely

Right on the money with BOTH points. :)

I agree - each is about ten percent high - which is understandable at an LGS but might also mean there is room for negotiation.

A friend of mine has my 457 - I'm hoping he buys the Para-Ord that he wants and gives me my 457 back some day!

If I didn't have my 6906 I'd be really interested in that 639 my own self.

I wouldn't offer more than $350.00 based on the apparent condition. They are nice guns and you'll see a few threads on them on the forum (if you haven't already).

Keep in mind you'll want to buy at least one more magazine, a recoil spring set, and maybe a main spring. The springs are the routine replace when you buy a used gun items that several of the very knowledgeable people on this forum recommend.

That's all assuming you handle it and give it a good looking over before you make an offer.

457

My experience with the straight (black 457) is that they're bringing 350-400 bucks all day long. The Stainless 457S will run more, and the ZanderSport (two tone) even more yet. The last black one I bought about six months ago cost me 399.95 LNIB, with three mags. I've paid about $50 less for an LE trade-in, no box, with one mag (it was in VG condition). My experience with these pistols (I've had five now), is that they're suprisingly good shooters, having no problem keeping up with my 4513TSW. I've also found them to be easier to shoot than my CS45. Not bad at all for a "value-series" pistol!

I paid $450 for a like new in box plain jane 457 and don't regret it one bit. The used gun has an amazing DA trigger - almost as if it has been worked on.

The pistol seems to have the same or less felt recoil with most loads as my full size, all steel Springfield Loaded 1911 .45 which is pleasingly surprising for myself and most others whom I allow to shoot it.

Mine has fired 185 grain Gold Dots, 185 grain +P Cor Bon DPX's, my 230 grain FMJ's, and 230 grain Gold Dots without a single malfunction from 3 different magazines.

Several people whom have shot the 457 have asked if they can purchase it from me or where they can find one. Mine is not for sale. :) I have linked them to Gunbroker and two of them have purchased their own 457's.

I think the 457 is an outstanding deal at $400 when the average pistol is $500 or more.

My first experience with the pistol here:

Thanks for all the replies. I'll have to stop back in there & handle them both & find out the exacts of them.. how many mags, original box, field strip em etc
I was kind of worried the .45 would be too much for that small of a gun. Maybe not with Aluminum frame?
I have an xds in 9mm & love it but never shot the .45 version.

I am picking up one tomorrow I purchased off GB for $350 that appears to be in like new condition, 1 mag, no box. Of course with shipping and transfer I will be in it for $390. In the condition it appears, $350 OTD seems about right - try negotiating if you like it.

I have two 457s and a 4506, Sometimes I alternate shooting one after the other. It is surprising how well the 457 shoots compared to the 4506. I don't find all that much difference in perceived recoil even though the 4506 weighs about 12 ounces more. For self defense purposes accuracy of the two guns is also similar. I also find the 457 to be a good all day carry gun. The 4506 is not an all day carry gun for me.

Guess I'll definitely have to handle them first
They also had three 4046 sitting there that were not in that bad of shape. I think those prices were $400 to $500. I'm just not a .40 fan.

The 4046 is a great gun as well, but very different from the 457. Beside caliber, the 4046 is a larger and all stainless frame so much heavier. It's also DAO instead of TDA. The nice thing about the 4046 is being all stainless its very easy to get rid of handling marks with a scotchbrite. Also the going price on a 4046 is much lower, I paid just $230 for a well carried one a couple weeks ago.

I don't think anyone is going to argue about the Model 457 being a fine, effective weapon. :) I would absolutely LOVE to find a Model 457S. :D Yes, I'm a stainless kind of guy and both the 457 and 457S are on our MA EOPS list (meaning IMPORTABLE!). :)

But when you are talking price or value, condition is everything. And that goes doubly for black/blued 3rd Gens (especially the value line guns). :o

Bottom line: There are 457's out there that I'd pay as much as $500 for (my "no wife approval required" limit) and there are 457's out there that I wouldn't touch for $300. :( Yes, I know that's a big range.

All I am saying is consider the gun's condition when talking fair price. :o Not all used guns out there are created equal. :p

I just picked up my 457 I got off GB. It is in better condition than I expected, nearly new. Seller didn't say it would come with original box, but it did - nice surprise :)

It did have the infamous trigger play spring click, but a little push to bend it forward took care of that.

Range trip this weekend to try it out along with the 4046 I picked up last week. I must say the all steel 4046 feels incredibly more substantial than the alloy 457.
