S&W 48-4 - Suggestions on Ammunition? Photo Added 28 May

22 Mag handguns are more picky about ammo than 22 LR, in my experience.

I usually get excellent accuracy with WW 40 grain JHP (silver box) and WW 34 grain JHP (black box).

The 30 grain CCI doesn't do well at all; Fiochhi 40 JHP is even worse.

The 40 grain Mags will be going about 300 fps faster than a 40 grain HV LRs in a 6" barrel and the Mag will group about 3" lower @ 25 yards.

The Rem. magnum ammo I pictured is from the very first production run from 1959 or early 60. Supposedly, all of this ammo was recalled for some unknown reason. It is very scarce. I have a M48-0 4 screw, # K 368119, no XXX's, shipped 7-1959, two months into production and really searched for a matching date box. I am a collector, so this early gun will not be shot any time soon. Big Larry

Funny, the CCI 50 grain JHP (really old stuff, it appears that is not manufactured any more) does the best. A close second is CCI 40 grain and Fiocchi 40 JHP.

WIN Dynapoint is the least accurate but then again not by much.

Way cool thread.

I have a 8 3/8" NIB (Presentation box) 48-3 in nickel, with both the 22WMR and 22LR cylinders. VERY COOL, or should I say HOT!

It's a special order from 1975.

Since it's unfired, I doubt I'll ever "break the seal", but it's tempting.

Best wishes,

Roger a.k.a. Mr. Wonderful

Gee - I hope the photo shows up

Wow!! Very nice.

My S&W 48 came in a presentation box also. It was an old towel. :)

What are you waiting for? Go ahead and shoot it!

Thanks,

Very nice gun you have there Hoover. Those targets really make it. I was lucky enough to find a 650 w/aux 22lr cylinder, and a 651, both J frame 22 magnum this year. Loud and fun to shoot. Enjoy

Federal makes a 50 grain product and some have good luck with it. The Dynapoint is way slower than the rest of the Mags - In some revolvers more like a 22 HV LR. The Fiocchi is exactly 100 fps slower than the 40 grain WW product in my guns.

I don't know what kind of groups you are getting but you might try a box of WW 40 grain JHP or the more expensive 34 grain WW. ------ Last week I shot groups under .7" @ 25 yards with both of these. The 34 grain JHP shoots about 1.5" lower than the 40 grain JHP but they both are amazing.

I bought a bunch more silver box as when something works this well for me it usually gets changed/cancelled. The new stuff came in a re-designed box (still silver) so I'm hoping they didn't change anything about it.

I shoot Richardson's Ground Squirrels with the silver box round and it is very effective out to as far as I can hit them.

My 48-4

Thanks for the ammo information. I inherited this gun and have never fired it. I knew the 22 long did not fit. The rim is too small on the 22 long.
