S&W 5rd mags suck... anyone else

Like it says.... I purchased the Camo AR-10, comes with one 5rd mag. The gun runs fine with my other Magpul mags, but the mag that came with the gun, when loaded with 5 rounds has a tendency to have the follower hang up on the inverted notches stamped into the sides of the mag to prevent more than 5rds being loaded. I can load the mag fine, but when I either give the mag a slap on the side to line up the rounds or slap the bottom of the mag into the lower, the mag follower gets stuck on those notches. The problem is the spring looses it's pressure on the follower and the rounds have nothing to push them up and hold them in the mag... hope I explained it right..

They are junk. Got a ten rounder with mine. I use it as a vise block not a mag. Holds the gun in the vise pretty well.

Are the 10 rders a steel mag as well? Like I said the 10 rd Magpuls are perfect, as they are the same as my Colt 901 AR-10.. I called S&W customer service, they were excellent and sent me a replacement. I told the kid, if it's the same type mag, the same issue will occur. I thought it would be fine... I was right. I actually took a flat file and using the edge of the file, filed the notches down from inside, now it's fine with 5 rds, I can even load up to 7 rds... but I shouldn't have to do that..

Anyone else have the 5 rders from S&W with this problem?

The one I got with mine is a metal 10 round mag. I have since purchased all Magpuls. They have never failed me in the ar-10 or ar-15.

Only have experience with ASC 10 (came with the rifle) and 20 round mags. I haven't used a 5 rounder, which I assume is an ASC as well. Not great but not terrible either. Magpul is definitely much better.

I've tried some M-14 5 & 10 round mags with my MVP and I have to say I'm not a fan. No idea who made them though. I probably should look at them better.

I have several ASC mags for other guns and have not had any problems with them. They are well made and have not failed. The mag I got with the M&P has no markings in or on it. Being this is Maryland , It may have been a substitute after the fact. Not sure what they were shipped with but Pmag is the way to go.

I'll agree, ASC is a dependable magazine. They work and they are durable.

The five rounders are made by ASC... they are well built, the problem with the 5 rounders is the way they modified them to limit the capacity to 5 rounds. I'll try to take a few pics to show. I did make my own mods to prevent the problem from happening with 5 rounds loaded, but I shouldn't have to..

Notice the space above the round, they all fall out after I smack the bottom of the mag installing it in the magwell.

The follower is stuck on the notches...

After trying a couple of time to get the 10 round ASC mag that came with my M&P-10, I tossed it and got got a few Magpul 20 and 25 rounders and never looked back

Does magpul make a 5 round mag for this gun?

I've had problems with my steel one it came with...a couple months ago it cost me a doe. So I went online and bought a 7.62 x 51 5 round pmag. Got it, ripped open the package, and put it in my gun case. Fast forward to today, I took my (camo) AR-10 outta the case to clean it, and decided to test my new 5 round mag.
But to my dismay IT DOESN'T FIT!
Here's the one I bought:

It doesn't physically fit in the magwell.
I assume I bought the wrong thing, and I also assume magpul doesn't make a 5 round 308 mag??? Does anyone make a good one?
FYI, 5 round mags are the max I can use for deer hunting.

I take it you had the same problem as me.... the follower got stuck on the 4 notches to stop it from loading more rounds. I did fix mine by taking the mag apart, removed the spring, the follower doesn't come out because those 4 lugs prevent it from coming out. I pushed the follower all the way up to the top of the mag and went in there with a small flat file. I just filed down enough to allow the follower to drop down a little more so that when I loaded 5 rds, the follower would ride over those lugs enough so that it would become jammed on them.. it's a terribly poor design. I could load my 5 rds, give the bottom of the mag a light smack to make sure it's seated and that was enough to force the follower to get jammed on those lugs causing the spring pressure to be lost...

yeah, sounds like the same problem. Do you know, does anyone make a good 5 rounder for it? I'm not to keen on modifying it. I would just like a good reliable one. (that fits in my gun, lol)

No, sorry, I just picked up a few more Magpul 10 rders and use a couple of my Colt 901 mags. I called S&W when I 1st noticed the issue, the rep hadn't heard of any issues, told me he would send me a replacement mag and to keep the original one. I told him if he sent me the same mag, I would have the same problem... I was right, but now I have 2 mags... fixed em both for my use.
