Are these things really as rare some claim? Found one in a pawn shop yesterday, looks unfired. Admittedly, this is the first one I have ever seen, but the way some people act, it's the holy grail of J frames.

But did you buy it? :p

I guess the reason why it's highly sought after is because the early ones were chambered in 38spl & had the shorter 2" barrel and fixed sights. The 60-1 was made in '72 I think but in limited numbers. Around the mid 90's is when S&W changed the frame to the magnum J frame. They still produce the model 60 today but only in 357 magnum.

Or is this the 60-1 Ashland model with the adjustable rear sight? These were also limited run in 1986 with approximately 660 units for the Ashland Shooting Supplies Co. in Ashland, Ohio.

According to SCSW, the 60-1 was made in 1972 as a square-butt with 3" heavy barrel. Only 171 made in serial number range of R56962-R57239. So yep, I think I would run right back there and buy it.

I suspect from the numbers regularly sold or for sale online they are more common than reported. Having said that, good job on finding one! :)

Yes, it was the adjustable sight model, and of course I bought it, I'm not stupid, LOL!

Agreed, maybe not considered a Holy Grail as would the '72 issue but never the less a fairly scarce model to run across out in the wild these days. They are neat little 60's in my opinion. Please post some pics when you get a chance. I've got an original Shotgun News ad somewhere around here when they were offered by Ashland back in the day. Anyway great find.

Congratulations on a good score, I picked one up a few years back.
Very nice piece, I put the presentation grips on, Came with the original grips.

This is a 60 no dash with the 3 inch barrel and square butt I picked up last year. Put presentation grips on this one as well.
