S&W 629 STEALTH

I am new to the forum, but, does anyone know if the barrel of a 629 Stealth is stainless or carbon steel. Spoke with a S&W Tech today who stated that the finish (matt black) on this revolver could not be bead blasted because some of the parts were carbon steel. I know the front sight, trigger, and hammer are carbon steel, and the frame & cylinder are stainless steel, but was curious about any other carbon steel parts. The matt black finish is durable against most chemicals and the weather in general, but not very durable against scratches and wear. Was hoping to get a finish like the 625JM, but guess not.

They are stainless, thats what the "6" in 629 stands for. If it was carbon steel it would just be a model "29" designation. Hope this helps and welcome to the forum.

Yea, I know Mule88, had a bunch of 629's, but the barrel of this particular 629 is different, maybe one of Lothar-Walther's. The Tech?
thru me with his reply. Got another reply from a different tech today via e-mail who said they would refinish the gun (As I requested, I assume). Sent an e-mail back to him for clarification awaiting his reply. It would seem to me also that the barrel was stainless, but the coating on it looks different than that of the frame & cylinder. Thanks for the reply though.

The Standard Catalog says the barrel and frame are stainless. I just bought a 629 Stealth last month...the all black layout...and the coating on mine looked consistent (birdsong finish).

Did you get the green/black variant?

NO, ACTUALLY I HAVE THE SAME ONE AS YOU. I SENT IT BACK DUE TO A POOR FINISH RIGHT OUT OF THE BOX. THEY REFINISHED IT, BUT THE BARREL LOOKS DARKER THAN THE FRAME & CYLINDER. IT HAS SOME SCRATCHES (MY FAULT) THAT GO DOWN BELOW THE BLACK COATING AND THE UNDERCOATING ACTUALLY LOOKS LIKE A GREYISH BLUE, LIKE A PRIMER. THERE IS ONE SILVER MARK ON THE BARREL WHERE IT HAS WORN THROUGH THE FINISH. THAT IS WHY I ORIGINALLY CHECKED WITH S&W TO SEE ABOUT GETTING IT FINISHED LIKE THE 625JM. I HAD ANOTHER PERFORANCE CENTER 629 THAT HAD THE SATING STAINLESS FINISH THAT I BELIEVE IS MORE DURABLE. THE GUN SHOOTS GREAT WITH A BURRIS RED DOT SIGHT ON IT AND IT'S PROBABLY A BETTER FINISH FOR HUNTING, JUST NOT AS DURABLE.

Thanks for the info. Mine was purchased for hunting but it hasn't seen much duty yet so I have no idea how the finish will hold up.

It does shoot well...I love the look and feel of it. And the thing is heavy enough that I had the 11 year olds shooting it last time...the weight just ate up all the recoil.

Good luck with it and let us know how it turns out.

OUT OF CURIOSITY, I SENT AN E-MAIL TO W.E. BIRDSONG ASSOCIATES TO SEE WHAT THEIR APPLICATION COATING PROCESS WAS. NEITHER OF THE TWO S&W TECHS I HAD CONTACT WITH SEEMED TO KNOW MUCH ABOUT THE BASIC PROCESS. I RECALLED SPEAKING TO MR. BIRDSONG YEARS AGO VIA PHONE ABOUT HAVING ONE OF MY REVOLVERS COATED AND WAS SORRY TO HEAR OF HIS PASSING. HE WAS VERY EASY TO TALK WITH AND SEEMED TO BE A STAND-UP GUY. HOW IS THE FINISH HOLDING UP ON YOUR 629?

Glad to hear your 629 shoots well. I have attached a target from a couple months ago, shot at 50yds. I was pleased with it as it only has a Burris Fastfire II red dot sight on it and at my age I need only focus at one plane at a time! Hope you have a great day.
