Here's a couple for your thread.

I am considering one. I have the 642 which I pocket carry, but find the recoil makes it not fun to shoot at the range.

Is the recoil much less on the 640? And how many pocket carry it?

Thanks.

I pocket carry a 640 in cooler months. my normal dress is shirt, sweater and cords or heavy slacks. I wear Perry suspenders to help support weight and sweater over the suspenders. There is a marked difference in percieved recoil with 640 over 642 (which I carry in warm months.)I also use Hornady 125 gr (non +p) XTPs in all of my carry guns. All of my EDCs have Pachmyer COMPAC grips also. The combination works for me but it isn't necessarily the definitive carry!

I've had the 640 for a long time, but have come to prefer the 442's lighter weight. Easily controlable with Speer 135 gr +P.

Great guns!! My usual carry piece is a Blue 40-1 loaded with Buffalo Bore 158 gr LSWCHP loads. In summer; wearing shorts, T shirt, & sandals; I usually go to a 642 with Speer 135 gr Short Barrel JHP's. The 642 is also my main choice when it's time for coat & tie.

Lots of folks on this forum and others put down the .38, but I doubt any of them would volunteer to be the target for a "Live Test" of what a .38 can do.

I've got mine, a Model 640 no dash, Ser. No. CENxxxx, tested for +P+. It is loaded with .38 Special 158 gr semi-wadcutter lead HP+P.

Great piece of machinery!

SCofS&W, page 400, says:

I don't know what the "Oct. 2003" hiccup means. Looks like BSJ39XX left the factory between Aug. 1994 and Jan. 1996.

I've had mine since August 1992.
Everyone who sees it asks if came
from the S&W Custom Shop because
all the edges are rounded and smoothed.
That's just the way it came from the factory.
They don't make things like they used to.
After years of experimenting with different grips,
Bantams, Uncle Mike's Boot Grips,
Spegels and Rogers/Safariland, it wears
Pachmayr Compacs, like my 3 other J Frames.
No fabric grab, closed back strap, fits in a pocket
and the pinky cut out makes it fit in my hand the same way every time.
It's loaded this way:
First 2 Buffalo Bore Standard Pressure 158's.
Next 3 Buffalo Bore 158 +P's.

I purchased this S&W 640 new in the early 90's.
The finish is Black-T, grips are Craig Spegel boot grip.
