Very cool, DC7; and great photo as well. As I understand the Bard'o S&W's 3rd edition opus (aka SCSW3), there was only around 150 of them defective 640's made, excluding the Paxton Quigley's (one of which I've never seen). There were actually a few different production runs of no-dash PC-640's, and unfortunately not all are listed in SCSW. 150 were made with rosewood service stocks like ours (PCT s/n prefix); another 150 were made with rosewood finger-groove grips with diamond mother-of-pearl inlay (PCU prefix--I used to own one of those too). There is also an identical version with rubber grips called the Carry Comp, which had an LPC s/n prefix (which SCSW lists as the prefix for the Paxton Quigley model, but I believe that's a mistake.)
You don't see any of these for sale very often, so there must not have been too many built overall. Nice guns, though--I'm not a big fan of the huge compensator hole, but I sure like the Performance Center tuned action!

Today, my 640-1 .357 is in the hands of FEDEX on an FFL to FFL transfer. I expect to see it in a couple days.

Ok it took me a day or two but here is a better picture of my 640(-3) with accessories...
What I'd like to see is pixs of j-frames actually in ones pocket... Does your pocket holster really obscure the outline of the gun?

It took a while to find what I was looking for, but I finally got a 640-1 this week! Crappy cell phone picture, but this one is like new.
BTW ArchAngelCD those grips are out of this world. Exactly what I am looking for. What are they?

Hello All, It's been a while since the thread has had any action so I thought I would ask youall a question about the ammo you would use in your 640's for defensive purposes? I want to stick with 38's because I really like them in this particular little revolver. This is the weapon I leave on the nightstand along with the little 12ga pump under the bed.
I took it to the range Thursday to practice with WWB and the CT grips. It did real well with nice tight kill groups out to around 30' and consistant body mass shots out to 25 yards.
This is a fantastic little revolver that has everything I want in size, weight and dependability.

Seems I'm a club member by default - the only S&W I own is a 640. Could anyone tell me the birth date? I'm the second owner and haven't a clue. #BSJ39XX MOD 640 under yoke. THX in advance!

I just picked up a gently used, no lock 640-1 (I already have a no lock 642 which I love). Question though...it's a 640-1, ser.#CET5xxx, in original case, and the spent sample in the case says it was test fired in may of 2001. The marking on mine are slightly different than in the photo's on this forum. The left side of the barrel has no markings at all, and the right side of the barrel say Smith & Wesson, with 357 Magnum just below it. Is this unusual? When did S&W change over to the locked version? Thanks to all...

Hello All, It was a year ago this month that the SYW 640 Club was started. Sooooo HAPPY BIRTHDAY 640 CLUB.
I hope everyone has enjoyed their little, big guns as much as I have. I call it my "little Big gun" because it shoots like a BIG BOY.

I guess I can join because I have a 640 (no dash) I bought new in the early 90's. The action is *very* smooth.
But I have a question for the 640 experts, why is the "CEN" serial range apparently the most desired?
Also, I know some of the 640's were marked 38+P on the Barrel, and I saw one post mentioning 38+P+ (?)
My barrel just has 38Special on the barrel, no plus P.
Why did S&W mark some guns differently and are they ALL safe for +P or even +P+ ??

My 640 is a first year production with the CEN prefix. I believe all the first year or so production had the CEN prefix and were marked in the frame window Rated for +P+, which mine is also. All the barrels were always marked .38 Special. I'm talking about no dash, .38 Special only, versions here.

I now have three 640-1 .357M, no-lock snubs and have stopped looking.
