Just went down and did the paperwork on my new S&W 642 Pro with the moon clip option, and I have to say it's a very well put together piece! Fit and finish is excellent, and the little revolver is LIGHT!
Anyone else think the M642 is a great gun?

Nice! I've got the 442 Pro, great little gun though they could include a few more moon clips with it.

I've got the 342 pd... I love it, but I'm a revolver noob. Can you enlighten me as to the difference between 342 and the 642, and especially what the "pro" signifies

M642 is my carry gun of choice, although mine is not a Pro.

Had some recoil control problems when I first bought it (was using a pair of beautiful but useless Siamwood grips), solved that with a pair of Hogues. Yes, Goodyears, but they make the gun controllable, that is why we all went to them back in the 80's, before grip collecting become a pasttime. I aslo have a set of smooth wood boot grips for when I need to be sure the gun does not print.

The 342pd has a titanium cylinder and weighs around 11oz, a little less than the 442/642 with a stainless cylinder (some 442s had/may still have a carbon steel cylinder) which are around 15oz. The Pro versions of the 442/642 come cut for moon clips and without an internal lock.

My 642 is the gun I carry, when "unarmed". ;-)

B_san,

Thanks for the info. I bought the 342 6 or 8 years ago, not knowing what a niche it would fill. Now it bounces between her purse and as a back up for me.

It makes a great "to the mailbox and back" gun, but it sure does have a bite.

My 642 (not Pro) is my go-to carry piece. Have shot 'lots' of rounds through it. Love it! :)

I have the 642-2 (not Pro) I picked up several years ago which has CT Laser grips on it. Only change I made to it was installing the Apex kit to reduce the trigger pull (which is about 10 or 11 lbs. as near as I can tell now).

Carry it (like the man says) when I go out "unarmed" in either a Galco Vertical shoulder holster, a Speedmaster or Galco Summer Comfort. Have a new OWB offering from Galco called the "Hornet" on backorder on LAPG now and am interested to see how it will work out in the crossdraw mode (can also be used for appendix carry).

Looking to pick up sometime this year either a 640 or 442. Great little revolvers.
