S&W 681

IMO the M is pretty vague. It could be Minneapolis, Memphis, Metropolitan, or like I was thinking Medina. And I doubt I’ll pay $75 to get a letter telling me the history of this gun. Unless someone has the exact same gun stamp and knows for sure where it came from or an officer that used one replies will probably never know.

"MPD",,, the possibilities are endless. A factory letter would likely show it shipped to a larger distributor, not directly to a Department. If anyone has one so marked that they purchased direct from their agency, might be as close as you can get.
Prices (as already stated) will be all over the range. Varying widely depending on the location and buyer/seller.
That said,,, 4" L-frame,,,, what's NOT to like!
A "OSHP" (Ohio) & "NYSP" (New York) version

Let’s just say from all the values that have been posted I would almost be steeling this gun. Im more than likely gonna buy it.
With that said I’m not a big fan of fixed sight guns (unless it’s a j-frame).
I’ll have to see how it handles and go from there.
I was curious about the M stamp, I don’t know if it was a local department that issued it or not.

If that’s the case, you stole it already, right? Or let me know where it tis.
I love FS revolvers.

I bought a 581 no dash from a friend and have shot it in my ICORE & IDPA games. It handles great. Only changes I made were replacing the houge grips with a set from VZ and I painted the front sight neon yellow to account for my aging eyes.

I did send mine in for the M recall- I’ve had no issues with it prior or afterwards

So PC Magnus were the only grips shipped on the gun from the factory?
Asking because I found these grips marked 4/80. What would these have been on?

The 681 is one of those models that rarely has their original grips on them. For good reason, magnum loads and magna grips are not a good combination. As I recall mine had pachies. Could a 681 have come from the factory with targets? I’d say entirely possible but not common. Never say never with Smith.

I ordered some Hogue rubber’s, that’s what I have on the 586. And IMO they are better than Pachmayer. What’s the estimated value of the target grips I posted above?

I just bought a 681 from a pawnshop in Huntsville, AL, but have to have it shipped across the state line to TN.

With shipping and transfer fees, I'll be in it for $690.

It's obvious the previous owner didn't take good care of it, as the cylinder face and top strap are black as night, the cylinder finish is a bit rough, the front site appears to have been painted with reddish fingernail polish, and the U under the rear sight has been painted white.

It has Uncle Mike's on it, which I don't mind.

I picked it up last night. It seems pretty tight for a cop gun. It is a 681 no dash low serial #25**. Probably won’t get to shoot it until this weekend, weather permitting which doesn’t look good at this point in time. I shoot outside at a buddy’s, I haven’t been to an indoor range in over 35 years.
The only thing wrong with it that I can see is the ejector rod, the knurling is buggered up a little on the one side. If I was able to find one cheap I would buy it and replace it but not a big deal to me. It’s not a collector gun. If anyone has one that would fit let me know. Or would a new one ordered from S&W work? I can’t imagine there’s any differences.

I looked at those two and a bunch of other online sites. No luck

I looked on eBay and saw only two. One with the cylinder crane and rod for $129 + shipping. And another for a 2.5”.
