I have a Colt Gunsite Pistol, 1911. It is stainless with a beadblast finish. I am looking at getting the flats polished to a Series 70 type of look. I have contacted Colt and they want $200 and it will take 4 months. Too long for me to be without my pistol. So I was curious about people's experiences with the S&W custom shop. Has anyone had any refinishing done by them? Excellent quality? Prices and wait times reasonable?

So, you're considering sending a Colt to S&W for work?

Anyway, I say of you're only looking to true up and polish the flats, that's quite simple to do yourself. I'd be glad to offer some tips if you are game to try.

Cheers

I know it seems weird sending a Colt to S&W, but the wait time of 4 months has made me start looking around to other gunsmiths, so I figured why not check out one of the largest gun manufacturers in the US? I'm in New England as well so I'd save on shipping if I send them the whole pistol. I've just never really heard much about the S&W custom shop so was wondering what their rep was.

Well, I guess this was a pointless thread. I called S&W and they informed me they do not work on any other brand of guns but their own. So I will continue looking for a quality smith with a reasonable wait time. Perhaps impossible, but I'm gonna look!

Anything that Smith touches, even if it's just sent in for cosmetics, has to meet their own standards for function, safety, etc. They need to have the parts on hand to rectify any mechanical problems found. For that reason, they can deny working on their own products if the parts are obsolete.

Sprefix, you are one of many who recommended these guys. So I called them up and they said they could polish the flats on the whole pistol for $130! When I said I may want to try just the slide first they said that would only be $52. Wow. And a wait of only 3-4 weeks (which they said would probably be less). I've decided to test them out by sending in just the slide and see how that turns out. They have a great reputation, great prices and fast turnaround time.

I'm sending out my slide on Monday.

Zenner22 - I understand you wanting to send the gun out to be worked on by pros, but if the Master Chief (BMCM) offers to help you DIY, I'd consider the project in the finest hands available. Just sayin'...

If I had any talent at all I would have taken him up on his offer. He sent me a link to a pistol he refinished and it turned out fantastic. You're right, the man knows what he is doing. I trust him, it's me I don't trust! I'm just not handy. I don't go beyond field stripping.
