S&W K22 5 screw maintenance

I have plenty of Kroil and a soldering iron with a small tip and will put a little heat on the screw head with the soldering iron tip.

I don't know why it took so long for this to pop into my head, but it strikes me pouring Kroil into the cylinder stop hole (top side) with the stop held down with a pin/needle gives the liquid DIRECT access to the threaded end of the cranky screw---just fill it up in there, and then go play with your children's mother----time's a wastin'!!

The next thing that popped into my head is you said the sideplate's off----so never mind pouring the Kroil into the cylinder stop hole---seems like you can access that hole from under the sideplate.

I say "seems like" because all my guns are long gone----having decided it'd be best to leave behind a pile of money rather than a pile of guns---I've also given away all the books I need now to make sure I speak with straight tongue about what's what and how high up is with these guns.

Soak the stuck screw (it holds spring and plunger for the cylinder stop) with Kroil over a days time. Make SURE you are using a Hollow Ground screwdriver bit that PRECISELY fits the screw head. Move the screwdriver in BOTH directions trying to work the screw lose, then in the correct direction after it loosens a bit. If that screw still won't budge, insert the screwdriver bit and have someone help you hold the gun. Give the screwdriver handle a few good raps with a soft faced hammer - that might break the rust or goop bond. Try the above procedure once again. You can also have someone help you hold the gun, or better yet lock into "soft" vice jaws and use a wrench on the screwdriver bit while pushing down onto the screw (assuming it has 6 flat sides).

At the risk of sounding like a broken record, MAKE SURE the screwdriver bit is Hollow Ground and fits exactly to the slot!

There are several you Tube sites that have complete S&W disassembly and reassembly step by step. I'd watch these several times and then decide if you feel competent to to it. It isn't difficult, if you are reasonably mechanically inclined.

I have found the one by Jerry Miculek pretty good.. Avoid the one that tells you to PRY the side plate off, That is a no-no.

And as a not so incidental addition to all this, CLEAN the screw slot before you even think about sticking a screwdriver blade in it---although you could do worse than cleaning the slot with a smaller blade---that works rather well.

See if this works. It´s from GunBlue 490.Not a K 22 but it will apply Regards Ray

How to Disassemble and Care for a S&W Revolver ~ Learn from a Factory Trained Armorer! - YouTube
I watched the video and it is a huge help. Although I haven't done so yet I will be able to get it a part and back together with the video. Sure is a lot more parts in a revolver vs a 1911. Target grips came today and I mounted them. Grips fit my hands much better. Appreciate everyone's help.

just to add: Brownell's sells a dedicated S&W bit set that covers all 4 scew sizes used on any S&W over the last , say, 100 years (or more-I haven't messed with any older to know for sure). Brownell's also sells the slotted tool for removing and re-installing the rebound slide and spring-a VERY useful tool!
