Hi Guys
This is my first post on this wed site. I am buying a early S&W M&P 38 SPL.
It has a 2" inch barrel. Finish is about 90% or better Original wood grips numbered to the pistol. The pistol is all matching and the serial number is C56276
Can you please tell me the year it was made and a fair price I should pay for it. A retired policeman gave it to me and just asked to pay him a fair price for it.
Regards

That was made I would guess 1948 or early 1949. The "C" started at "1" in 3/48. 2" and original grips is desirable. Is it the original barrel? (should have a forward locking lug for the ejector rod, 1/2 moon front sight, and (I think they did it on 2" also, but not sure) s/n on the barrel flat above the rod.

If all is original, and finish is truly 90% and barrel matches, then I'd say the range is $350 to $400 for a "auction" transaction. Between friends it could be lower - say $250 to $300, which might be a typical pawn shop price if you can locate that feature combination.

Very desirable gun, in my opinion. I have been on the lookout for one. Welcome.

Hi.
Thank you for your reply. It is the original barrel, On the flat it does has the same serial nr. C56276. has the half moon front sight. And the forward locking lug for the ejector rod.
He is more then a friend, when I was kid he helped me from alot of trouble!!!
I will pay him the $400.00 for it.
Again I thank you for your help. I hope it was made in 1948. That is the year I was born!!!

think I dated my 2" pre 10 5 screw SB to 1949, its C 127XXX, so good chance yours in 48

got it local and paid a bit less than $400 a few months back, all matching, 95%+ original grips, no box or stuff......GREAT shooter

Bob, Welcome to the Forum! I posted a thread about a week ago regarding a 1950 "Pre-Model 10" that I recently purchased. The picture in that thread should look like yours. They are GREAT snubbies! I hope you enjoy yours and post a picture of it so we can all enjoy it!

Bob,
I have the "Older Brother" to your M&P. This is Serial # C537xx:

Does yours have a round or square butt?

Hi Guys
Nice looking 38 spl pistol. Looks just like mine. I sent the letter and $30.00 to find out about my pistol and any history that might go with it. I think as well that the date of my pistol is 1948.
It will take up to a 6 weeks to receive my letter back from S&W.
regards
Bob
