Picked up a new to me model 41 came with 3 factory mags and 2 barrels unfortunately no box. Shorter barrel appears to be a 5in field barrel .Not sure of year serial 409xx thinking maybe 1961-1963 needs cleaned up then out to shoot it.

Congrats on your Model 41. :) I have to admit I’m a bit envious of your field barrel. I’ve never had one to try but it looks like a nice addition.

If you are new to 41s, might want to give it a careful cleaning, a new recoil spring, and stick with standard velocity ammo. Whether necessary or not, using standard velocity ammo was always recommended to me, when I bought my 41, but heavier recoil springs were available for use with high velocity cartridges. I had no need for HV ammo so did not bother with the other springs.

That's a nice pistol! I agree that standard or match velocity - which is about the same in speed (~1,070fps) - ammo is all you need for the gun's intended purpose. If you're going to punch paper with it, there is no sense in pounding it with high velocity stuff.

I had always wanted one, drooled over them and Colt Match Woodsman back in the 70s when I could not afford them . Will use CCI SV mostly for plinking and occasionally squirrel and rabbits.

Here is some useful info. When I bought mine I was young and dumb. I bought it as a shooter. I shot and still do shoot a lot of Hi velocity. Bought mine in 88, still running strong. I just change the recoil spring a lot.

There are 3 versions of field barrel. I have the first version blade
and third, Baughman with red insert. I believe yours is second edition plain Baughman.
I’ve fitted out a couple 41s with these barrels and Herrett 1911
and 1911a1 type grips. Had to shorted magazine releases to prevent accidental drops with the thin grips. Made them up for field carry.

Interesting in hearing about “Baughman” terminology.

I know that these different field gun barrels has been extensively discussed here. Some were cut down and some were factory. (?) Hopefully I’ll pay more attention this time and retain.

Here is a fourth edition of a field barrel. I cut this one down from a new 7” barrel and had a local gunsmith crown it for me. Since I planned to instal a reflex dot the lack of a front sight to me is a plus. Iron sights and 80 year old eyes don’t mix well.

Most of cut barrels I have seen have a front sight that is attached with a screw.

So I went out this morning to shoot and function test my used 41 purchase, it shoots well. However I was surprised when I went to load magazines as 1 of the 3 that came with pistol appears to be a .22 short magazine. That will not work for me I will have to find a buyer when I establish value. Took pictures and it is only marked 5rds and has spacer in top behind metal follower with hole in bottom af mag base.

I always wanted a Model 41, I hope that yours is a lot of fun to shoot, but I have to admit my aging eyes make my S&W 22S good enough.

The 22 short magazine for the 41-1 is probably the most expensive magazine for the 41 series pistols. I can’t give you a value but do your research and don’t sell undervalued.
