I have shot my Model 1 Second and Third with .22 Short CB caps. This is essentially a bullet and primer without any powder in the case. Do not use any standard .22 Shorts or you are likely to grenade your cylinder. The CBs I have are Remington but I'm sure others make them as well.
I found them to be a lot more accurate than expected at close range on a silhouette target. That is, if you can find the tiny front sight.

I asked this question a few years back and received the same answer; I think the .22 Short-length version Chris mentions are BB caps, and the longer ones (that I don't think will chamber?) are CB caps.

From what I remember, CBs are conical bullets and BBs are round balls. As long as they are .22 Short, either will chamber and fire in a Model 1. I think they used to make those in .22 Long and .22 LR lengths as well.

I can not find CB Caps lately. You can find CCI CB Shorts and they yield about 450 fps. I have also chronographed original 22 short black powder and get about 600 to 650 fps.

Anytime you shoot a gun that is 150 years old, you run the risk of breaking something and as you know from your other post, parts are very tough to come by.
