Friend brought me a Model 1000 shotgun, I did not even know S & W ever made a shotgun till this week. The S/N is FS44931. On the Operation & Maintenance Manual I see part #27 the Piston Shock Absorber and am wondering if it was some kind of rubber because there is just a goo of black stuff between the Magazine Spring Retainer Washer and the Piston. If this is a rubber part where would be best place be to get one?

Also could this be the reason it would not fire? My friend thought it might be the Firing Pin or Firing Pin Spring. I thought that unlikely but looked and they look just fine.

Thanks

I purchased one of these shotguns back in June. I'm no expert on them, but I have read and learned a lot about them online. There are some members here who have much more experience with the Model 1000 than I do.

I can tell you the original piston shock absorber washer material was prone to breakdown from exposure to solvents and is most likely what has happened to yours. This can cause the gas system to not function properly, which will cause malfunctions. It can be a real pain, but make sure you get it all cleaned out of the magazine tube.

If you do some quick searches online you will find in depth discussions and explanations on this issue. There are a couple of suppliers where you can get a replacement part for this washer that is made from better material. Again, a quick google search will yield results.

Hope this helps some. I'm sure some of the more experienced members will be along to offer their advice as well. Enjoy your shotgun!
