Color matters! When it comes to EDC / CCW leather belts, holsters and pouches - learned my lessons!

This thread is mostly meant for guys and gals new to EDC / CCW and addresses something most people don't think about in the beginning. I have learned this lesson over the years and thought I might pass it along for those who are interested and have an opened mind. Not lecturing here - just trying to throw out what I feel is some good advise that I have learned from making these mistakes myself along the way. Food for thought for others as well.

Over my lifetime of CCW / EDC (50 years and counting) I have owned a plethora of gun belts, holsters, pouches and cartridge loop carriers. When I started out 50 years ago I bought what ever color I liked best at the time, mostly tan, mahogany, light brown, etc. No doubt - custom made gun leather in a gorgeous color is very beautiful and satisfying to look at after spending big bucks. That said, over the years I have learned a valuable lesson! Since then I have only bought basic black CCW equipment over the last 25 years.

I have never carried exposed (open carry), except at the range, private property or at a sanctioned match and in fact in some States it is actually illegal to do so. Since the concept of CCW is having the gun and accessories completely concealed, color can make a huge difference. In NY State which I lived in most of my gun totin' life, if your handgun was exposed (even by accident) you were subject to getting your permit yanked! They were quite eager to pull your permit for any excuse they could find too! Getting it back after that isn't easy or cheap, so you don't want to screw up! Thankfully I no longer live there but the main point I am making is that even the very gun friendly State that I live in now, your want your concealed weapon to remain concealed. You do not want to tip your hand and let anyone know you are packin' - until the weapon is drawn and presented. If there is a shooter in a public place looking to start trouble and he sees someone packin', he is likely to want to shoot the gun toter first!

Anyway, if you are packin' and your shirt climbs up, your jacket gets blown opened by the wind, your equipment peeks out when bending over, reaching, or whatever, I have found the absolute best color for equipment is black. Yes, plain old boring black! Once in a blue moon, even if being careful, we have all accidentally had our CCW rigs peek out for a second or two. When using tan, brown, mahogany etc. those colors stick out like sore thumb against most clothing. Black is almost a non color and tends to blend in, especially with blue jeans. I understand that some guys like the beautiful lighter colors showing off the makers talented work, but for CCW that is not in your best interest IMO. Sometimes boring, basic black just makes more sense. Oh and the big bonus here is that all the nicks, scratches and minor gouges can easily be made to disappear just by using a little Kiwi or Lincoln shoe polish. Tan, brown and mahogany do not respond as well. Black is black - works great!

If you are buying a rig strictly for competition, Cowboy Action Shooting matches at a range, own many acres of land and want to "strut your stuff", that of course is a horse of a different color. I am strictly discussing CCW in public here. It took me a while but I have either purchased all new gun leather rigs, had the lighter colored stuff dyed black and reserve my beautiful colored rigs and holsters for the range, private property and match shooting where it matters not. When I leave the house my CCW rigs are all black and it truly seems to work the best. Just passing my experience along. Hope it helps a few........
After 28 yrs. as a LEO, and now being completely retired, I have experimented with a lot of rigs, holsters, duty gear etc. I have always favored black. I make a few holsters as gifts or for myself. I've tried IWB, OWB, ankle, shoulder etc. I have found that I don't like Kydex, or thin-leather IWB holsters. I need a bit more padding between my body and the gun. I wore pancake holsters off-duty for a long time for the S&W Model 60 and K-frames. They are great if you have something to cover them. I also don't care for the phony moulded plastic holsters like Safariland makes. I got my old duty rig out a month or so to shoot a qualification course and the vinyl/plastic is crumbling off of it. In cold Iowa weather the plastic gets extremely hard and can crack. I prefer good old black leather. Basket weave also hides a myriad of scratches etc. to the leather. I have containers of different holsters I have acquired over the years. Included is an original NYPD swivel holster, and a CHP swivel "Safety Holster" that springs open.

I agree on black as being the best color for a CCW holster. I have tan, brown, and black holsters, but the black is the least likely to be visible should the concealment garment fail to fully conceal.
If you wear black that's true, I'm wondering how brown leather would contrast against some commonly worn colors

EDIT: 8-28-25, Costco and Amazon did not have my size. My beautiful wife, apparently with a photographic memory, that can find anything anywhere in our house, told me I already have a nice pair of cargo shorts! A few minutes later she hands me a pair of Tommy Bahama's the last time I wore them was in Maui about 10 years ago. I was so happy they fit perfectly, and they have really deep pockets.

Can I be cool looking at 77 years young in Cargo Pants!!:giggle:

I second the OP re black as the best pick for a concealment holster. Also give some thought to clothing as other members have mentioned with the objective to blend in with the populace. Finally, a blued pistol/revolver would be the most discreet option.

Being on the slender side, I've had to make sure all my pants have 7 beltloops to help support the stiff EDC belts and EDC pistol weight.
Something to look for. Never was a concern before I started carrying. Had to buy all new shorts and pants.
What pants did you get and where to get them?

Hi
I'm retired and have hobbies, I don't leave home everyday. When I leave town and hit the road, I commonly carry in cargo pants, or an ankle holster.

My question for those who are saying that black holsters etc are the best for concealment. I'm not disagreeing that black is more easily concealed. I will state that wearing black shirts and pants in the Southern US will cause you to lose water weight, rust your gun, and possibly point you out as someone carrying a concealed weapon. (Remember the Ranger / Tactical vests from 10 years ago?)

It seems that the alternative to black shirts, black IWB holsters, and a black belt is cargo pants. I'm old, retired, and a nerd, so wearing cargo pants / shorts is not exactly a fashion choice that I'm uncomfortable with. Actually, using my name and fashion the same day is a rare occurrence. Is this all a reasonable summary?

Hi Duluth Traders carries khaki's made of fire hose material. The ONLY problem with them is that gun oil does stain the tan khaki material permanently. I last bought a pair at least 3 years ago and they all still look good.

"my black basket-weave holster burned me as a Cop"

So you should wear the color & style that your local LE Dept. uses, so if it peeks out, the viewer might just think you are one, and not raise a fuss.

Having a bright "fashion" color or better, a patterned design, peek out from under your shirt, especially if the shape is not "muzzle" - I dont think anyone would presume its a gun.

You could even apply a label to the lower end, like "T-MOBILE" or whatever brand of cell phone is recognizable as a trademark.

Belt loops - yes, some interfere with appendix/belly carry.

Mexican carry - I recall many years ago, someone came out with an improved design, still basically a loop but IIRC there was a shaped cradle. Anyone remember what this brand was called? With 3D printing, the concept is even more practical...

Are you carrying in the cargo pocket or in the upper pocket? If the cargo pocket, what type of a holster are you using? I am always looking at different ideas.

cargo pockets - replace the two buttons with metal magnetic fasteners -
Magnetic 3/4" Round Clasps - at the fabric store

Looking for a cargo pocket carrier that will keep the gun upright.

Alabama Holsters makes a kydex one.
